Redecorate Your Bedroom: Hot Color Trends Create Relaxing Sanctuary

Christine Bude Nyholm
The bedroom is our personal sanctuary for a hectic, demanding world. Home and Garden Television, HGTV , has published some tips and color trends to create a peaceful personal space. The bedroom should be a place where we can relax and rejuvenate. The lovely, soft colors of nature offer a palette that is soothing and relaxing in the bedroom. Theh bedroom is the place in the house where we should be able to get away from it all.

According to Jack Bredenfoerder, the president of Color Marketing Group (CMG) , "People want to simplify their lives, and we're seeing that trend in color palettes for the bedroom and throughout the home." Color Marketing Group is a not-for-profit international group of 1,100 designers who meet annually to forecast color trends for the fashion industry, interior design and the automotive industry. The Color Marketing Group predicts a trend toward soothing shades taken from nature in the bedroom.

New Neutrals: Earthtone shades of medium to dark browns are perfect for the bedroom because they are nurturing. Bredenfoerder explained that "In 2008 we are going to continue to see beiges, browns and tans that will tend to more earthy and grounded - reflecting the colors of rock, stone and soil".

Seattle designer Nancy Satterberg said "Greens and browns are a classic combo that's very popular right now." She goes on to explain that the colors give a feeling of cozy warmth in the bedroom. She cautions to select the shade of green with care, as some shades are not flattering to the skin. Greens should be fresh and light. Light shades of green are lime green and fernwood green.

Shades of Blue: The Color Marketing Group predict s that the trend toward environmental palettes will boost the popularity of soothing combinations of green, blue and blue green. The greens are softer, such as botanical green. Blues reflect the colors of the sky and water. Soft shades of botanical green water blue with white trim are a soft fresh look.

Blues and greens have long been considered the most relaxing and soothing shades. The blue-green color combination is perfect for a restful bedroom. The Pantone Color Institute, which is a interior design industry leader that forecast the hottest color trends, has recently introduced a new palette of blues and blue-greens that are inspired by water.

Lavender Glamor: Lavender is a soothing, peaceful color which combines well with a look of old Hollywood glamor. Gold can brighten up the look of lavender. Neutral tones, such as eggshell on the trim and ceiling, combine for a lovely balanced color palette.

In the Pink: Bold pink can have a sophisticated, yet warm, relaxing look. CMG's Brederfoerder said, "{This isn't the same soft, sweet pink you see in little girl's rooms." He goes on to explain that pink has become a solidarity color for women. Strong pink is the color of the Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbons. The sophisticated pink has a just a little yellow tone in it.

Princess Room: For young girls, the new shades are lavender and green. The green should be light and fresh, so it does not overpower the lavender. Lavender is a soothing tone which is complemented by an earthy spring green. Botanical green had a light, fresh appeal that refreshed the senses.

The color trends are natural and relaxing, rather than overpowering. Look to the outdoors, the lakes, skies, rocks, earth and the flower gardens to see examples of these refreshing color combinations.

I am afraid to go with a bolder color, even a pastel scares me. Guess I am not daring enough to make a change from off white walls with the colors coming from accessories.
