Redecorating Your Little Girl's Bathroom in Hello Kitty

How to Redo a Bathroom on a Budget

Amy Witthohn
My daughter's were tired of their "Nemo" bathroom they had had for a couple of years, and pumped up by their interest I asked them to pick me a color. The vote was in and it was an unimanous "Pink". I went on line with my daughters and we looked at a couple of character themed bathrooms, but nothing seemed to grab us that is until we saw Hello Kitty. Now that we had our theme I wanted to pull this off in a way that was cost effective and practical because children are known to get " tired" of things quickly.

The first step is to purchase your supplies. Finding Hello Kitty bathroom was a little hard I found a lot on ebay and Target carries it too. There were two shower curtains to choose from I showed them to my daughters and let them pick. We went with the more colorful one. We also bought a Hello Kitty rug and shower curtain hangers ( which are adorable). I picked up a Hello Kitty fleece throw as an afterthought as well I purchased these items at www.Target.com. Then I went to Lowe's for the paint depending on how much you are willing to spend you can find fairly cheap paint and If you are flexible with your colors you can get some great deals on some already mixed colors. I found a discount Bathroom paint that matched one of the colors on my shower curtain. Always take something with you to match paint to this helps you avoid any costly errors. The color was Salmon ( a dark pink) and I also purchased a gallon of white so that I could mix and create different shades of pink. This is a great way to create many shades of the same color and it saves tons of money as well. The primer was next and I purchased a dark colored primer because I wanted my pink to be a little darker to set the stage for the sponging with the lighter color that was in my " vision".

Now unless you are using wall border or lots of wall decorations you need to play around with the paint a little bit and use at least two different tones of the same color, I think painting a room all one color without accents makes the room look smaller. I decided to sponge the bathroom sponging gives a really unique effect and I love it.

First I painted the walls with my primer to get things started this was of course after I covered my bathroom floor and accessories. If you are unsure of your painting skills you can buy painters tape to help you avoid mistakes. When my primer was dry I took my salmon colored paint and covered the walls with two coats. While that was drying I got out my white paint and mixed it with the salmon about 1/10 salmon to the white paint. It turned into a light pink that I just knew was going to look wonderful sponged on the wall. When it was time to start sponging I first wet my sponge and rang it out, and then I dipped it into my mixed paint and using quick liberal strokes I started covering the wall not leaving much space between each sponging, then right before it dried completely and when you sponge it dries quickly I took a clean dry paintbrush and ran it straight down the wall from top to bottom. This helps to blend the colors better.

Now its time to add your bathroom accessories I put up my shower curtain, put down my rug and stuck my decals to the mirror. The effect was great and my daughters were really excited too. The throw that I had purchased was cut towel length and hung on my towel rack, and I also cut the hello kitty faces from the fleece blanket and am saving them for future decorating. Its amazing what you can accomplish with a glue gun.

What colors you pick for your walls is the key for future design projects in your bathroom. Luckily my pink sponged bathroom goes very well with a lot of the character themes for girls bathrooms. The Hello Kitty of today can turn into Strawberry Shortcake, Barbie and even Disney Princess later on saving me the time and money of painting again. Every little bit helps. In the end I redid the bathroom for under 60.00, and you can always add things as you go.

I live life to the fullest extent that I can, I have 2 daughters 11 months apart and the antics that they do on a daily basis will keep me on my toes for a long time.  View profile

  • Decorating can be cheap if you look in the right places
  • Pink is a color that a lot of themes are available.
Buy already mixed paint and if its not exactly your color mix it with other colors to acheieve desired results.
