Redeem Your Career After Being Fired

Todd Hicks
Have you just been removed from your job? If not, are you in danger of losing it? If either situation applies, it is time to take charge. You will learn how to save your career after being fired.

You can attempt to go out on your own terms. For example, if your boss tells you it is time to go, you should offer to resign. If you are allowed to resign, you will probably be eligible to keep your benefits and get a pension for the rest of your life - this beats getting unemployment benefits worth maybe a few hundred dollars a week for a limited period of time.

If you are allowed to resign, you should do it in a special way. You should turn in a letter of resignation that has your signature on it. If your boss agrees to sign it, you should ask if you can make a copy of it. Having this copy could work in your favor in regard to getting a new job offer.

Another thing you should do is ask your boss for a letter of recommendation. It just might work, especially if you are being let go due to poor performance or staff cutbacks rather than doing something wrong.

You may not bad-mouth your ex-boss, especially if you are at a job interview. If you do this, the recruiter will be unimpressed and likely think of you as a troublemaker.

If you can, you should avoid saying you were fired. For example, it would be a good idea to answer a question on an employment application that asks why you left your last job by saying it was time to move on.

There will be times when you must own up to it. If you are directly asked if you have ever been fired, you must admit it. If it is discovered you lied after getting a job offer, you will probably be let go on the spot. As they say, honesty is the best policy.

It is crucial to fight for yourself. A good way to do this is to ask the boss for a second chance.

You must be persuasive while pleading your case to a hiring manager. You should discuss how you have changed your ways for the better.

You should think about your entire time with the firm and reflect on every possible mistake you made. By doing this, you will surely make it easy to avoid messing up the same way again.

You must do something constructive. Update your resume and cover letter; practice interviewing for a position; and keep your skills up to date.

It is vital to adapt. Be willing to train for a career in a new industry. Be open to relocating to another region that has many good career opportunities.

You must maintain a positive attitude and forgive the management team at your old job. This will make it easier for you to concentrate and do everything right as you prepare for a new career.

Take these steps to redeem your career after being let go!
