I'm going to start off with the positives to this product first. What I liked about Redken's Smooth Down Butter treat was that it had a thick, rich creamy texture to it. It really got deep down through all of my hair to my scalp to nourish and moisturize my hair. With many conditioners I find that there's too much water in it and I end up having to condition my hair twice otherwise it just comes out dry. I liked that this Redken product contains macadamia oil, candelilla wax and cationic refiners. I thought it did a great job keeping my hair from getting frizzy in humidity, and leaving my hair looking very polish, silky smooth and shiny. Oh, and it smelled really nice too.
There were a few things that I didn't like about Redken's Smooth Down Butter Treat as well. My first turn off about this product was the price. It cost $15 a tube, but of course that's not a total deal breaker for me since a little bit of product tends to go a long way. In the end it kind of works itself out in the cost category. I didn't like the twisty cap either. When you're hand's wet that can be cumbersome to try to open. I have noticed that if I used a little too much product it would weigh down my hair and make it oily sooner than it naturally would. It takes some trial and error to figure out how much to use for your hair. It's hard for me not to use too much because the conditioner is so thick it's hard to spread it evenly throughout my hair without applying more.
I've been using Redken's Smooth Down Butter Treat for a while now and I have mix feelings about it. I wish I could say it's a great product and you should definitely go out and get a tube for yourself, but I can't. I have had days where it works wonderfully, and days where it just makes my hair worst. It hasn't worked consistently well for me so I most likely won't be purchasing this product. If you have straight, fine hair like me that has a mind of it's own, I wouldn't recommend this product.
