Reduce Acne by Shaving Properly

Conor Sherman
As an acne sufferer, I know how much of a burden acne can be. There was a point in my life where I would really try to stay away from others because I was so self-conscious about my acne. Fortunately, my doctor enlightened me to the fact that I might be causing my own misery by shaving improperly. After careful application of these techniques, I was able to significantly reduce my facial acne. Hopefully, by following these simple guidelines, you will be acne-free as well.

1) Closer isn't better

Everyone has seen the commercials for razors that guarantee the closest shave. Unfortunately for people who suffer from acne, a closer shave does not always equate to smoother skin. When facial hair is shaved extremely short, it can lead to ingrown hair infections. This occurs when the hair grows into the skin instead of out of it after being shaved. This mostly-harmless problem can, however, lead to mini-infections in the hair follicle which result in raised bumps and redness. What can you do to prevent this? Shave as you normally would, but don't do anything that would cause the stubble to be shaved irregularly, like pushing down hard on the razor.

2) Shave with the grain

The hair on everyone's face grows in a certain direction. The sideburns usually grow downwards, for instance. ALWAYS shave in the direction that the hair grows. This will greatly reduce irritation experienced post-shave, and help to keep your skin healthy. Although this is not the way to get the closest shave, it is the way to reduce the ingrown hairs. As mentioned earlier, closer isn't always better. I'm sure that your girlfriend will be understand if you don't have the worlds closest shave for a couple weeks.

3) Apply post-shave products

One big step that people often forget to complete is to apply one of many post shave products to help re-hydrate your skin and reduce irritation. It is common to apply a light moisturizer post-shave, which will help heal any tiny cuts in the skin from the razor. Another helpful product that I found works wonder is witch hazel. This liquid helps to reduce irritation in the skin and reduces redness as well. It also acts as a toner for the skin.

By following these simple guidelines, you will be able to drastically reduce the number of shaving-related acne breakouts, and hopefully reduce the number of breakouts all together.
