Reduce Your Grocery Bill by Reducing Your Grocery Trips

A good way to really do some overspend on your grocery bill is by going to the store. Unfortunately, we have to go to the store in order to buy food to eat. However, by reducing how many times we go to the grocery store, we can in return reduce our grocery bill and save money.

Every time you go to the grocery store there is the risk that you see something else you need, something else you didn't have, something else that is on 'sale'. Even if you are just running in to grab a gallon of milk cause you ran out, the way the grocery store is designed is to make you walk through the whole store in order to just get that gallon of milk. You have to walk past the cookie isle, the candy isle, bakery, produce, deli, and ice cream - there are temptations and 'wanna be sales' everywhere. Next thing you know it your trying to jungle 10 items in your arms because you didn't get a shopping cart or basket. After all, why would you? You were just going in to get milk.

That's why I say - if you want to save money on groceries - stay away from the store (as much as possible anyways). Here are some tips to help you reduce your trips to the grocery store.

1. Plan A Weekly Menu

Planning a weekly menu assures that you will have enough food and meals to last the week. If you have enough meals for the week then you won't need to make any extra trips to the store in the middle of the week.

2. Make A Shopping List

After you have your menu completed, make a shopping list with any items you need to complete your menu. Include any staples such as milk, bread, eggs and any items needed to pack lunches, if needed.

3. Stick to Your Shopping List

You have heard it before - stick to your shopping list. This can sometimes take a lot of will power - but if you are determined to save money on your grocery bill, you can do it.

4. Substitute and Be Creative

During the week you may have forgotten something or run out of something and think you need to go to the store. Stop and ask yourself if you really need it. Is there anything else you can substitute for the item? Get creative.

5. Send The Non Grocery Shopper

In the middle of the week if you find that you have ran out of something you just have to have, send the person who doesn't' normally do the grocery shopping. I have found this to work because they usually don't care about deals - so they aren't going to look for any as they pass all the temptations as they walk through the store. In addition, they could usually care less about the grocery shopping anyways - that's why they are the non-grocery shopper - therefore they could care less about picking up any extras. Usually, that is.
