Freecycle: A Virtual Trading Post

Mio Shibata Georgiou
During the late 90's when the economy was strong and consumer spending was high, the theme of the decade was "bigger, bolder and brand-new." Companies designed the latest must-have products; factories produced them; we bought them; and in a couple of months when our interest waned, we threw them out. For many of us, our impact on the environment was hardly a thought on our mind, much less a concern.

Fast-forward to 2008 and we are in a historic economic crisis; although there has been a huge rise in the level of eco-consciousness, unfortunately, many families now cannot afford to be concerned about the environment.

Luckily there is a solution for families who still need the latest "must-have" product; except this time "must-have" means just that. Freecycle is a grassroots online community that helps organize localized groups with 'free exchange' as the ultimate goal. Anyone can join their local Freecycle group and search for necessities like baby strollers, clothing, electronics, athletic equipment; you get the idea.

Localized giving and receiving of used goods reduces waste in our landfills and helps families in need. A virtual trading post for parents around the world that are budget- and eco-conscious; Freecycle is the gift that keeps on giving to the 'green' community.

  • Reusing products keeps them out of landfills, saving the space for other non-recyclable materials.
  • 2nd hand products and hand-me-downs have been used for many generations by families.
  • Help less fortunate individuals in your area by giving away reusable goods.
