Reduce Waste and Cut Your Food Bill by 25%

With the tough times that have been facing our nation nothing has gone unaffected, not even the price of food. But did you know that most Americans can cut their food bill by 25%? The Daily Green reports, that according to government sources 25% of the food Americans buy goes to waste. That is roughly about one pound of food, per American, per day - that goes in the trash. The food then rots in a landfill and cannot even compost properly because it is devoid of light and air, as a result methane gas is created. Luckily, there are ways to cut waste, use natural resources wisely, and save money.

Reduce Waste and Cut Your Food Bill by 25% Tip #1: Shop for groceries no more than every two weeks.

The simple way to stop wasting money on stuff you don't need? Shop less frequently. The key to grocery shopping is to shop smart in order to avoid spoilage. Try cooking two or three meals worth of each recipe at the beginning of the week and immediately freeze the extra portions for the next week.

Reduce Waste and Cut Your Food Bill By 25% Tip #2: Actually eat the left overs.

Eat them for breakfast, pack them for lunch, or make a sandwich out of it! Consuming leftovers 24 hours after they were made actually reduces the chances of it spoiling in the fridge.

Reduce Waste and Cut Your Food Bill by 25% Tip #3: Brownbag your lunch.

It has been stated time and time again that taking your lunch to work helps with two things: controlling your food portions and saving money. Restaurant eating only makes you waste perfectly good food you have at home and wastes oil to get from work to the restaurant.

Reduce Waste and Cut Your Food Bill by 25% Tip #4: Rotate.

When you buy new food from the store, bring all of the older items in your cupboards and fridge to the front. This way you run less risk of food going moldy before it is eaten.

Reduce Waste and Cut Your Food Bill by 25% Tip #5: Don't immediately throw things away.

Fruit that is going soft can be made into smoothies and vegetables that are beginning to wilt can be made into soup.

By following these simple tips you will begin to see results in your grocery bill while helping the planet. Remember, everything you start to save eventually adds up.
