Reducing Calories You Eat at a Fast Food Location

Lance Esondi
Generally speaking, if you are on a diet that is designed to lose weight, it's a great idea to avoid eating at fast food restaurants. While this is a good goal, sometimes it's hard to avoid it because you might be there with family or friends at times. While fast food typically has more calories than something you would prepare at home, you can still use a few techniques that will help you cut calories from these meals and not ruin your diet completely.

Many people will order whatever salad is on the menu. You should be careful about this because many salads have the same calories as meals that you expect to be high calorie. Drop the use of dressings if you want to cut calories. Be careful about salads with too many nuts because this can quickly raise the calorie count.

Try to stick with water or drinks without calories. A significant portion of a fast food meal comes from the sugars in the soda. If you skip soda and drink something else without calories, you are cutting calories.

Skip the side items that you know aren't very healthy. Try to get fruit as a side instead of french fries, for example. This helps cut significant calories from each meal.

If you are going to get a sandwich of some kind, do not use mayonnaise on it. This alone adds too many fat and calories to the meal. Get rid of the mayonnaise and use a different type of dressing that isn't as high in calories.

Don't be scared to ask for nutritional information. Sometimes it's tough to know which meals are high in fats and calories and which are not. Get the calorie counts and carefully examine what the best options are. Once you know what the healthier meals are, continue to order those types of meals when going to fast food places.
