I Outline Vitamins that Will Help Prevent and Reduce Grey Hair

According to the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, gray hair is not due to excessive stress, but rather age and heredity. Hair follicles create a small amount of hydrogen peroxide and as the body begins to age, this small amount begins to accumulate within the hairs. Over time, this buildup of hydrogen peroxide blocks the production of melanin, which is what produces hair color. There are vitamins that can help prevent graying, yet ultimately, the amount of graying is based on your genetics, according to the New York Times.

Vitamin B5

Vitamin B5, which is also known as pantothenic acid, is among the essential B complex vitamins. B vitamins are responsible for creating healthy skin, eyes and hair. Because vitamin B5 is water soluble, the body is unable to continually store this vitamin; thus, supplementation is required. Not only is vitamin B5 able to create healthy and strong hair follicles, but it also aides the body in repairing skin wounds and lowering cholesterol levels, according to the University of Maryland's Medical Center. While this vitamin is available in many foods, such as unprocessed vegetables and grains, proper supplementation provides the necessary levels of B5 to prevent hair damage and to retain its vibrancy. For adults who are over 19 years of age, consume 5 mg of vitamin B5 per day with 8 oz. of water. If you have certain medical conditions, speak with your doctor before beginning a supplementation program with vitamin B5.

Vitamin H:

Vitamin H is also a part of the B complex vitamin family. This vitamin works within the system to transform carbohydrates into glucose, which will provide an increase in energy. In addition, this vitamin also supports the body in the creation of healthy hair, skin and eyes. Because of this vitamin's ability to strengthen hair, it is a common ingredient in hair-care products. While the body is able to create small doses of biotin within the intestines, supplementation is required to ensure proper levels of vitamin H. Adults should make sure they consume at least 30 mcg of vitamin H per day. If you feel you have a vitamin H deficiency, visit your physician, as he will prescribe a higher dose of this compound.
