Spring and summer are great times of year. The seasons bring warm, sunny days to most areas and flowers begin to bloom. Grasses turn green, trees get their leaves, and outdoor activities kick off. This time of year is great for bonfires, pool parties, and outdoor barbecues. Trips to the parks, strolls on the beach, and long bike rides mark several weekly summertime activities.

Though spring and summer bring great outdoor activities, this time of year can be dreadful for allergy sufferers. Pollen, dander, mold etc... all seem to peak during the warmer months of the years and the typical allergy sufferer can have a difficult time even going outdoors, let alone enjoying the outdoors and many others do.

Many allergy sufferers seek relief by partaking in numerous indoor activities instead. Seeking relief from outdoor allergens, sufferers head inside only to realize that for many allergies are indeed worse indoors. While we cannot control outdoor allergens, there are numerous home improvement steps that can be taken to reduce the amount of indoor allergens.

Below is a brief list that is vital for all of those who suffer from indoor allergens. Some of the projects on the list are costly, but for those on a tight budget, there are numerous options listed below that can fit into any budget. Your budget will determine which projects to focus on in the quest of reducing allergens and reducing the suffering the allergens bring.

The first and easiest home improvement project that will reduce allergen is replacing your furnace filter. This task is a do it yourself project that costs from a couple of dollars up to about $30. Replacing your furnace filter should be a part of a maintenance schedule. Replacing it in a timely manner will reduce indoor allergens.

Second, run your air conditioning in the summer or if need be purchase an A/C unit for your home. A/C reduces the amount of moisture in a home. By reducing moisture, mold has less chance of growing and as a bonus, your house will be more livable inside during the summer. During the summer, humidity reaches levels that enhance the growth of mold and without a central air unit reducing humidity can be difficult.

Other home improvement projects that will reduce indoor allergens include replacing any fabric curtain or window shades with a hard material window covering such as wood slats, or wood roman blinds, on mini blinds made of a hard non fabric material.

Additionally, by purchasing a vacuum with a HEPA filter, you can cut down on indoor allergens significantly. But this vacuum would see much less use if you do the number one home improvement project for reducing allergens and that is removing all of your carpet and replacing it with hard flooring surfaces.

Most allergens in a home are trapped within the fibers of your carpet. By simply opting for beautiful hardwood floors, you can significantly reduce allergens within your home.

There are many home improvement projects that make your home a better place to live. For allergy sufferers, following these simple steps and performing the home improvement projects listed above could greatly improve your health. You will enjoy those days spent indoors when the outdoor allergens are simply unbearable.
