Reducing the National Deficit

Includes Criticisms of the Republican Party

John Mario
The Republicans and the Democrats expressed concern about the national deficit. One way to show the world that we want to control the deficit is to let the Bush tax cuts expire. That's the advice Greenspan recently gave. How much havoc that will create with the economy is debatable. The economic experts think that the economy will take six years to recover. That means that if the expiring Bush tax cuts are extended, they will not pay for themselves in the next several years. Therefore, these tax cuts will increase the national deficit. Now the Republicans have a chance to prove they are sincere about lowering the national deficit but I'm quite certain they won't do it. The Republicans don't want to extend unemployment compensation without raising the money to pay for it. Yet they are perfectly willing to extend the Bush tax cuts even though they have no way of paying for them either.

When the stimulus package was being considered, Republicans claimed that it would raise the national deficit and be ineffective. The facts about the effectiveness of the stimulus package are straight forward. During the last six months of the Bush administration, 3 million private sector jobs were lost. During the last six months of the Obama administration, 6000 private sector jobs were gained. In the past few months the GDP has grown. The slowly recovering economy should aid in reducing the projected national deficit.

Fraud in one component of health care costs. Fraud adds to the national deficit and to Government expenditures. Therefore, tackling fraud should be a part of our effort to reduce the national deficit. The US Attorney General reported that the Justice Department uncovered over 251 million dollars in false medicare claims. Ninety four people have been charged with Medicare fraud.

Justice Department investigations of Medicare fraud and fraud committed by participants in the entitlement programs is where more money should be appropriated. The Republicans would gain a lot more respect if they concentrated their efforts on uncovering fraud rather than displaying their contempt for the poor.

Making a blanket statement about the those who have been unemployed for over a year means nothing without solid evidence to back it up. The Republican contempt for the poor knows no boundaries. But this type of empty rhetoric does nothing to lessen the national deficit.

In conclusion, the Republicans have been all mouth about lowering the national deficit but have done little except to unjustly blame those on entitlement programs for the nation's problems. It's high time the Republicans changed their attitude.

A major factor will be to stimulate manufacturing in this country. We cannot just raise taxes and cut spending. We must have a viable economy. Government and the private sector must work together to stimulate quickly nano technology, energy research and products related thereto to make us as self-sufficient as possible as quickly as possible (natual gas is here right now!), coaltions of universities and industry (such as Clemson and BMW in Greenville with the Automotive Research Center). We must help big business get big because that is what spawns small business. We keep blaming our president and Congress for unemployment but it will take strong industrial esnergies and creativity, with the suppor of government. Tie that to reduced spending. If HealthCare is adding to the deficit, let's look at it again. If eliminating the Bush tax cuts adds to the budget, let's rethink that (which ever party you are). There should be nothing off the table, and no Democratic or Republic vict

Good article. This is definitely the defining issue of our generation. Both parties are going to realize that without raising taxes (sorry republicans) AND slashing spending (sorry democrats) the deficit will eventually destroy our country. Just doing one or the other will never work.

I don't have any answers but sure wish they would get it figured out! tax cuts for the rich is wrong and I have had it with wars we can't win and shady reasons for combat. We need to take care of our own first.

The deficit is primarily caused by Republican policies of unsustainable tax cuts for the rich and unwinnable wars. Under Clinton, we had a SURPLUS.
Everyone does better when Democrats are in power.

yes tax cuts increase the national deficit but a good check and balances system keeps it under control, the admin has no choice but to try to keep americans in a good quality of life so tax cuts help that. There are no perfect answers no perfect budget, it is I think the hardest job to try to balance any country's budget

251 billion and only 94 people convicted! Shameful. And would yoou believe, we still have people who are sitting on their last dollare claiming their undying loyalty to the Republican party when it is clear they have no regard for the poor whatsoever. If it were left to the Republicans, the poor would be dispensed from this earth in any manner they feel necessary! Great article John!
