Reducing Stress and Its Effects

Drew Bush
Life can be really stressful at times. It can be from many factors including jobs, school, family, etc. If only every day was a vacation, right? Oh well, unfortunately that only exists in a perfect world. Sometimes, stress levels can become so unbearable that you may just want to crawl under your bed sheets and not come out. In this article, I will give some tips on how to manage and reduce stress levels so that you do not loose your functionality.

1. Get Enough Sleep

I can't tell you how many times my doctors have told me that it is extremely important to get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. Sufficient sleep is important for our overall health and helps to reduce the effects of stress. When we think of stress, we think about emotions. However, there are all kinds of stress. If you do not get enough sleep, both your physical and mental abilities become stressed. If you get the recommended 7 to 8 hours a sleep a night versus 4 to 5 hours, there will be a huge difference in how you feel during the day.

2. Eat Healthy

This is a tip that I still have to try to follow more often. How exactly does eating healthy reduce stress? Well, it's common sense really. If you constantly eat foods that are high in fat, calories, and cholesterol, your body has to work that much harder to digest it and remove all of the waste. In the end, this will put more stress on your body. If your physical abilities begin to wane, then your emotional ones will begin to wane as well. Try to eat more fruits, vegetables, grains, and foods that are high in fiber. This will make it easier for your body to expel waste and will make digestion easier. You will feel better both physically and mentally.

3. Listen to Some Music

Listening to some of my favorite music is a way that I have reduced my stress levels for as long as I can remember. It helps your mind drift off and allows you to stop focusing on life's most stress inducing events. Some people like to listen to soft music and others like listening to rock music. Whatever your fancy, let your mind escape for a while. Even consider lying down while listening to music.

4. Get a Pet

When ever I come home after a stressful day, I have my dog Buddy waiting for me. As soon as I walk in the door, he gives me the best greeting ever. He helps me forget the happenings of that day and in turn this helps me feel better. Certain pets know when their owners are not feeling good or are feeling stressed. Whenever I am feeling like this, Buddy will come right over and lay beside me. This helps me to feel more relaxed. Pets really do make a big difference.

I hope some of these tips help. I am sure many people have used at least a couple of these ideas and I hope it makes a difference. Feel free to leave comments and give any ideas you may have on relieving stress.
