Medical care is one of those necessary expenses that we all face at one point in time, no matter how healthy we are. The costs can be crippling, especially when deductibles are high and unexpected injuries or illnesses occur.

Luckily, there are some methods that can save money on your medical costs, or at least prevent financial hardship. Your doctor's office can be your first stop for reducing your medical expenses and providing pocket book relief.

Many doctor's offices are your first stop for help in handling your health care expenses. Most doctors understand the expense of medical care. Most also do not want cost to be a deciding factor between seeking medical help and trying to self-treat the problem.

Be upfront with your doctor or nurse about your financial qualms. Ask your doctor if they have samples of any medication that they are prescribing for you. Many have stockpiles of these that they are happy to provide and this can not only save you money, but also save the time that it takes to visit the pharmacy and get the prescription filled.

Also, be sure to ask if there are generic medications available that can provide the same benefits of the brand name prescriptions. Generics are cheaper and are many times equal to their name brand counterparts.

Ask your doctor about the coding that they are using for any specific in-office procedures or treatments that you have performed. A simple key word can trigger an insurance company to rate a treatment as one that is not covered, or as one that is under the deductible umbrella. Be sure to bring your insurance company's statement into your doctor's office to discuss any treatments that raise your eye or that you feel you are being wrongly charged for. Many times your doctor's office can advocate for you to get the charges reduced or covered. Sometimes a call to both your insurance provider and your doctor's office can erase charges that are unfounded.

Make it a point to see your doctor for well check ups. Nearly all medical reports say that early detection is key for illnesses and diseases that plague us. Medical expenses can be greatly reduced is a serious infliction is caught early and the required treatment is less severe.

Finally, be sure to ask if you can set up a payment plan if there are instances where the costs can not be reduced. Numerous doctors' offices can provide interest free payment plans that can spread your costs out over time and make a large cost easier to handle. Even small amounts paid on your account can keep you current and suspend any unwelcome collection efforts. Also, these small payments will allow you to stave off any fees or fines.

Your doctor's office might have further ideas on how you can reduce your expenses in relation to medicine. They will most likely be happy to talk to you about your options. This article is just a starting point for a lifetime of good health and reduced health costs.
