Review

All iPhone users take videos with their devices; I suppose it is only right to have a video editing utility for the said device. Reel Director offers the basic functionality of video editing software.

Users can put together video clips, add text for titles and credits and create smooth transitions between clips to make the entire movie look seamless.

Upon opening the application, a list of all saved and ongoing projects is displayed. To start a new movie, users simply need to tap 'New' - doing this will bring up a screen for the preferences. The first area lets users control the opening sequence with the following settings: (1) opening on or off; (2) Movie Title, (3) credits, and (4) style. The settings for the credits are fairly simple - it provides a blank input field so users can type in the names of the people that need to be credited. The settings for the Style let users select the position for the opening titles.

Users can also specify settings for the Closing credits of the movie as well.

The Transition option controls how each slide appears in the movie. The Reel Director provides five effects, with a total of 27 variations.

The last option under the 'New Project' lets users enable or disable High Quality Mode.

Once a project has been created, users can then start editing video clips. Users can use any video from the iPhones roll. It is as simple as tapping on the 'add' button to add a clip to the project. The O.S for the device provides users with the option of trimming the video clip before adding it to the movie.

When video clips have been added, users will be provided with an organizing tool to manage the clips. This screen displays the organizer at the top area; this is succeeded by the preview area for the footage. Users can play the clip and add or remove transitions. To go through the contents of a clip, simply tap the screen, hold and then slide. To move clips around, simply tap a clip and drag. Once done, tap the 'Done' button.

The options to save the movie, play it, share it, or remove it are shown on the Movie Info screen.

Reel Director is a basic video editing utility. Few features that are lacking is its ability to trim clips, and the ability to add music to the projects.

Pricing

The application is available at the App Store for $7.99.

Conclusion

The application is very well integrated into the iPhone. Its user interface, however, is only just above average, as is its re-usability. Overall, the Reel Director for the iPhone gets a rating of 4 out of 5.
