The Modern is located at 3200 Darnell St., just behind the Kimball Art Museum. The mission of this non-profit organization is to feature arts and artists of multimedia and offer educational programs to the public. Their permanent collection houses over 3,000 works. The architectural outlay of the building itself is seen as art. A 1.5 acre pond is situated on the outer part of the building and is visual from the galleries. It is like looking onto a pond of expressionism and soon seeing the shallow bottom. The tremendously high ceilings are molded around 53,000 square feet of space which displays large pieces of artwork from sculptures and painters. Membership is not needed to visit, but offer greater discounts at the gift shop and in the film club.
Reel people is the name of the film appreciation group at the Modern. Membership here gives you discount pricing to the weekend shows, an insiders invitation to the special events with filmmakers and its critics. It is the networking of this group that provides a deeper knowledge of the films and those who make them. The aspect of having a conversation over the masterpieces of such original films can be rewarding for those who enjoy this culture. The price for membership is $25 for singles, and $40 for couples.
The Texas Independent Film Network Series and The Lone Star Film Society will e showing home grown flicks here beginning in February. The showings in the over 200 seating capacity theater starts Fridays at 7pm, and continues Saturday and Sunday with afternoon viewings. December 26: "Today's Special," a French film, comedy of the world of chefs, and 99 minutes long. December 31- January 2: "King of Pastry," a competition in France of 25 chefs, 87 minuets.
