Reese Witherspoon's 'How Do You Know' Tanks; Are We Sick of Romantic Comedies?

It Didn't Help that the Trailer Sucked, Too

Reese Witherspoon's "How Do You Know" is a $120 million bomb, as reported at OMG. The movie, starring Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, Paul Rudd and Jack Nicholson debuted at number 8, pulling in a mere $7.6 million. Reese Witherspoon was paid $15 million for the film.

Are we sick of romantic comedies? Romantic comedies such as the 80's flick "When Harry Met Sally" or the 90's flick "Pretty Woman" are so good that we watch them over and over and over. But we don't have that same desire with many of the later romantic comedies, like many of the ones released in 2010.

What were some that we'd just as soon never bother with again? "Life as We Know It" with Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel was a joke. J-Lo's "The Back Up Plan" was a joke. "When in Rome," another Duhamel movie, was a joke. All of these movies bombed for good reason. If you look at the complete list, it seems there's just way too many jokes when it comes to romantic comedies these days.

Add Reese Witherspoon's "How Do You Know" to the list. We knew it was going to be a bomb when we watched the trailer. The goal of a trailer is to sell the movie, not keep people away.

But if you did suffer through "How Do You Know," you know that it's main problem is the storyline. Reese Witherspoon was great in "Legally Blonde." She's a good actress. But good acting can't save a tired plot. As one commenter noted, "The plot of boy meets girl, boy loses girl and boy gets girl back is beyond boring."

To Patricia, Really? Are you serious? That is a ridiculous, unfounded, divisive, baseless statement.

I have always really liked her.

It bombed because she disappointed a huge fan base. I always watched every movie she was in because she showed female empowerment with femininity. I have a half-hispanic heritage and was shocked when on a late night show she slipped in that her family was Tennessee republican. I assumed she was letting the world know she supported white without the dirty mexs. She, obviously, did not know she had a huge hispanic woman fan base, who loved empowerment with femininity stories. I'll never watch anything with her in it, again, which is sad.

Good coverage. I wanted to see this but then heard it was awful. I was surprised because I love Reese Witherspoon. I really liked "The Back-up Plan" by the way! The worst romantic comedy of the year that I saw was "The Bounty Hunter." So horrible!

Sadly, romantic comedies have become so formulaic, even most "chicks" think they lay eggs. It takes amazing writers, well-drawn characters, a riveting plot and incredible actors to make a RoCo work.

    Great work! Happy Holidays =0)

Actually, if done right, the traditional "boy meets girl" story line could be wonderful. They just need to find something a bit different to make it work.

It still takes a good script, along with good directing and acting, for a successful film. Good reproting!

  • Tamara McRill12/20/2010

Oh, agree! Romantic comedy seems to equal boring these days.

How did Life As We Know It bomb? It took $53m on a $35m budget in the US alone. Ok a mediocre success but a long way off a bomb. Decent movie too albeit predictable.
