Reflections of a Nursing Student

A Graduating Nursing Student Looks Back on His Journey

Brian Wilkerson
I'm almost there. The past 3 years have been a twisting, winding road filled with ups, downs and plenty of turns. Some stressful moment, some lighthearted moments. Lots of hard work, sleepless nights and studying until I thought my eyes would fall out of their sockets (orbits for those fellow nurses out there). This is the first in a series of articles I plan to write to chronicle my journey through Nursing School in the hopes that I can help future nursing students find their way down the same twisting, winding road many have journeyed before.

I already have a Bachelor's of Science in Biology and Biochemistry. Having little luck finding work in my field (most Pharmaceutical companies left the state) I decided to venture into the then unknown world of Healthcare. "How bad can it be?" I thought. It would make use of the degree I already have and therefore should be a "walk in the park." *Please note: I will be eating those words later.*

I signed up for classes at my local Community College and dove blindly into a new and exciting world. I took Anatomy and Physiology as an online class. I am very glad that I decided to take ONLY one class that semester. I spent in the area of 45-55 hours per week just studying for the quizzes and exams. There was a lot of memorization and recitation but knowing where I was in the body and how the organs and systems interact with each other has been invaluable. The better you do in Anatomy, the better you will do in Nursing School.

In the next article, the Nursing Classes (and fun?) begin.
