Reflexions on George Bush

Erik Van Tongerloo
George W. Bush was born on the 6th of July 1946 in New Haven, Connecticut and raised up in a political family. Also his grandfather was senator and his father was president from 1989 until 1993. He graduated from Yale University and worked for some time in his family's oil business.

He started his political career during the Presidential campaign for his father. In 1994, he was elected Governor of Texas and was the first one who was re-elected after a 4 years term. He might seem to be a good candidate for the elections for president in 2000; there are controversial opinions about his career as president.

First of all, his election was doubtful and he became president with fewer votes than Al Gore. The electoral vote determines the winner and that is the reason why Bush won the battle. The many recounts of votes were a reason for many doubts and many claimed he has stolen the 2000 elections.

I don't want to discuss or even give my opinion if he deserved to be president but my opinion of his career is not positive. I know he started his career as president with terrible problems. Eight months after he became president, terrorists of Al-Quada attacked America on the 11th of September 2001.The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon were destroyed.

Bush announced a global war against terrorism worldwide and started a war against the Taliban regime of Bin Laden in Afghanistan. I agree something needed to be done to stop this terrorism and maybe I can agree with his first decision invading Afghanistan. He succeeded in Afghanistan but Bin Laden was never found. This looks strange and maybe unbelievable; there are some doubts that he protects him and his motives were completely wrong. So we will never know the reality.

The battle against the global war against terrorism is just imagination; he must have known that he can't succeed. Looking back to the war in Vietnam; many people are killed and also this was a war with didn't seem to end. A global war against terrorism is impossible; there will be always conflicts and a war doesn't solve problems. Still now there are still terrorism attacks of this organization. Did he succeed? I don't think so; many attacks could be prevented if he was open for discussions but in my opinion he wanted a war and the result will be that we will never be safe.

George Bush will always be associated with the war against Iraq. He always claimed that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and were busy with rebuilding facilities for producing more nuclear weapons. This statement was an argument for starting a war against Iraq and so he did. Most countries of the world were against this war and it is proven now that they didn't have these nuclear weapons and we all know this war was not justified. Bush wanted to finish his father's work and kill Sadam Hussein and break his regime.

He must have known that this war has no sense; the regime of Saddam Hussein is broken now, but is anything solved now in Iraq? No, and still now the political system in Iraq doesn't work and every day we notice more deaths and innocent victims. Much money is spend for this war and could better be used for the real economic problems because "war" doesn't solve problems but create others.

My view on George Bush might seem not be positive and you are completely right in this statement but I will never say he failed in everything. Everyone has good and bad points but I don't think he can be considered as a good president.

Some good decisions are taken in changing the Medicare System, starting outlining the Social Security and a necessary debate for making decisions for the global warming issues. Also he took some good decisions for education and health. For some time he was successful in reducing unemployment and an increase of the stock market exchanges.

There are controversial opinions about George W. Bush as president and in my opinion most are negative and many will remember him as the president who spend more time and money for making "war" than solving the real economic problems. My personal opinion is not positive and I hope the next president will change that all. We all want a peaceful world but the war of Iraq was not necessary and could avoid many problems.

Barack Obama will be a vastly superior president and will work to rebuild all the bridges that Bush burned in the rest of the world.

I agree and I don't like him either. I hope you will get a better president.
