Refresh Your Patio with Updated Furniture

Michy Lynn
Furniture left outdoors tends to wear and get dull. The paint oxidizes and the plastic cracks. Eventually, just like indoor furniture, outdoor patio furniture has to be replaced or updated and refreshed. Do you have a patio that has no furniture on it? Why not? I love my furnished back porch patio, complete with chaise lounge, a fire pit, a humongous grill, a porch swing and a metal and wooden porch rocker that can seat three adults comfortably (or me curled up with a blanket and hogging all the space on the swing!).

You can really bring your patio or back yard porch alive with some updated furniture, and you don't have to spend a fortune to update and refresh your patio. Let's start by making sure you have all the patio and outdoor furniture essentials.

Outdoor Furniture, Patio Furniture, Porch Furniture Suggestions

At the minimum, you'll want a couple of chairs, a small table, a picnic table, a grill and perhaps a patio swing. I couldn't love without my patio swing, so I have to include that. The picnic table can be round, glass, metal, wood, square, rectangle, doesn't matter, as long as it has enough space for your family to sit at and dine after grilling foods. Wooden picnic tables are often the least expensive, but round picnic tables with glass tops and umbrellas can comfortable seat an average family and don't cost a fortune.

When not sitting at the table, though, you'll want some comfortable chairs or benches to sit upon, or for guests to use. You'll also likely want a table or two, such as end tables or small coffee style tables for putting drinks and other outdoor things down without having to set them on the ground.

I also highly recommend buying a porch swing and a porch rocker. The porch swing can be the style that fastens with chains to hang from the eaves/support of the porch or can be a freestanding A-frame. My porch swing is an A-frame freestanding swing and I can move it anywhere in the yard I'd like, often pushing it under the tree to sit, swing and read a book. Porch rockers are just... well, comfy and cozy.

Refresh Exiting Patio Furniture

If your patio furniture is lacking in luster, old, wearing, etc, you can update and refresh your existing patio furniture with just a few bucks.

Refreshing Metal Patio Furniture

A few bucks for a can of metal spray paint, some cardboard to protect your patio floor or porch, and a few minutes spraying the furniture and you can refresh your existing metal furniture, change its color and style with just a few waves of the can of paint. It's amazing how refreshing your patio furniture can make it look new again and update the entire look of your porch or patio.

Refreshing Plastic Patio Furniture

Refreshing plastic patio furniture isn't quite as easy as spraying a can of paint over it, because plastic can crack and dry and eventually wear out. If the plastic is still sturdy and not cracking, you can now buy patio paint that is specially formulated to bond with plastic patio furniture and you can repaint your plastic chairs and other patio furniture just like you do your metal one!

Refreshing Wooden Patio Furniture

Wooden patio furniture is really my favorite, because, even though it requires some upkeep, I think it looks the best the longest of all furniture, and if it's good quality furniture, a little sanding, a bit of paint, shellac or some stain can really bring your wooden patio furniture back to life with an updated look.

Refreshing and Updating Patio Furniture with Cushions

Outdoor patio furniture cushions can be purchased in just about any shape and size and they are designed specifically for being outdoors and exposed to the elements. You can buy them in different colors and patterns for each season, and match the colors and patterns to the paint or color of the patio furniture.

Refreshing and Updating Your Patio with Wicker

I love wicker furniture. I know, cheese and cheap, right? Not so much anymore! There are some awesome wicker couches, loveseats, chaise lounges, tables, end tables and more, all designed with interior quality but outdoor durability. The benefit to wicker is that it's light, easy to move, but durable. You can even paint your wicker furniture with spray paints designed for the job and change the color of the wicker with each season if you want!

It's easy to refresh your boring or neglected patio and once again enjoy it as an extension of your home, a 'room' in your house that just happens to be outdoors. It only takes a few select pieces of patio furniture and some creativity and paint and you can have a gorgeous updated patio ready to invite guests and enjoy.

Good article Michy, we have some very old metal patio furniture and a coat or two of paint every couple of years lets me enjoy year after year.

I SO need to do this, even though my patio is more the size of a "nook!" :-)

Great article! I love the "cheese and cheap" wicker too. LOL You're right though, there really are some quality wicker sets out there and they are easy to customize.
