Is Their Arrival as Important as it May Seem?

On February 26, 2010 the Mobile Chamber of Commerce proudly announced the Regent Aerospace, the world's largest aircraft interiors maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) company would be opening a new facility in the Brookley Industrial Complex in Mobile Alabama. The first phase, which will; begin immediately, will provide approximately 90 jobs to people who will be refurbishing aircraft interiors. The second phase, which will take place over the next two years, is expected to provide an equal number of jobs. The company stated they the average salary for these positions will be $24,000.

Regent chose the Mobile location because of its relationship with St Aerospace, a company already located in Brookley. Mike Lilley, vice president and general manager of Regent said "Both Regent and St Aerospace have mutual customers and the synergy resulting in both companies being in Mobile will benefit those customers considerably." ST Aerospace is an exterior MRO.

Bill Sisson, executive director of the Mobile Airport Authority expressed his positive feelings about the new company's decision and said "We are very pleased to welcome another tenant to Brookley at a time when our country continues to experience the impact of economic downturn".

Mayor Sam Jones used the 311 emergency phone system to express his feelings and welcome the new company to Mobile by sending a recorded message to the entire city.

Mobile has long been an area sought out y those in the aerospace industry. Northrup Grumman has been bidding on a contract to build tankers in Mobile. That contract has been a point of controversy for several years and continues to be a political issue as the bidding begins to open shortly.

Though any employment opportunities are welcome in Mobile it is significant to appreciate the low salaries expected. Is this the type of wage we hope to bring to the Mobile area? Is the arrival of this company as significant as some would make it seem? Sometime we have to question whether a nicely wrapped package has a worthwhile gift inside.
