Regina's Secrets Serve as Crucial Plot Devices on 'Switched at Birth'

FIRST PERSON | This week on "Switched at Birth," Regina's (Constance Marie) secrets served as crucial plot devices in several key story lines.

One obvious story was Bay's (Vanessa Marano) search for her biological father. Against Regina's wishes, Bay had discovered her father to be a man named Angelo Sorrento. However, when she approached a DJ at a local nightclub, he turned out to be gay, proof that she had tracked down the wrong Angelo Sorrento. All Bay learned from this was that she had no gaydar.

Yet her search was not a total loss, as it brought her and Emmett (Sean Berdy) together. For several weeks, they had bonded over their love of art, dancing to her father's old tape, and learning to communicate with each other. Bay, like Kathryn (Lea Thompson), had made significant efforts to learn sign language.

When Emmett tried to sign that he liked Bay, she was confused until he sent an unequivocal nonverbal message by kissing her. I rather like Bay and Emmett as a couple. I only wish Daphne had been given a legitimate chance with Liam.

Although Regina had always been secretive about the contents of Angelo's old guitar case, Daphne took matters into her own hands. She figured out the combination of the lock: "Bay." When she opened the case, she discovered an extensive collection of photos of Bay taken over years. She also found Bay's progress report from sixth grade. Had Regina known all along that Bay was her biological daughter?

Daphne's discovery may have a significant impact on the Kennishes' lawsuit against the hospital. John had opted to take the hospital's settlement, but the hospital withdrew the offer because they found information that could be used against the Kennishes in trial. What is Regina hiding? Did she switch the babies herself? Or did she keep silent after discovering the mix-up?

Regina also served as a surprising plot device in an unrelated story line -- Toby's (Lucas Grabeel) gambling problem. Toby and Wilke had stolen a chemistry test and sold it to pay off his debts. Although Wilke took the fall, Toby's family still had cause for concern because Toby had not overcome his urge to gamble. It took Regina's intervention for Toby to admit that he had a problem, take responsibility, and seek his father for help.

Are Bay and Emmett destined to make it as a couple or does he belong with Daphne? Will Daphne have another chance with Liam? What were the circumstances surrounding Angelo's departure? How will this hospital lawsuit situation be resolved? And has Toby finally kicked the gambling problem for good?

"Switched at Birth" airs on Monday nights at 9/8c on ABC Family.

I doubt Regina knew all along. This is going to have to be something she can explain and we'll be able to forgive her. My guess is she found out or became suspicious after Daphne became ill. There might have been a blood test. Maybe this even led to the father leaving because he was ruled out as a bio father. Maybe Regina wasn't believed when she first brought it up or she wanted to track down the bio family first because she didn't want to give away "her" daughter to just anyone. Maybe she was afraid they would take Daphne AND keep Bay or that Daphne would grow up hating her and blaming her for the illness. My guess is she had some valid reason for keeping her mouth shut about this and while it may muck up the Kenish's plan to get a big settlement, it made sense for the girls. I absolutely don't think that she switched the babies or "knew all along."
