SJ Murphy
Obama vs. McCain. Who will you vote for in the next Presidential Election on November 4, 2008? Oh, you haven't gotten yourself registered to vote you say? Well, let's get you registered! It only takes a few minutes to do.

Is it important to register to vote?

Yes, it is important to get registered as quickly as possible. The deadline to do so is quickly approaching for most states. You must be registered in order to vote on Election Day.

Why should I vote?

If you are someone who has never voted before, now is the time to take action. Take a stand for what you believe in. Get educated about our politicians, our future leaders, and what they stand for. Do you feel strongly whether or not the war will continue? Whether Medicare will thrive or not? Whether our economy will improve or not? I'm sure you do.

Does my vote really count?

Voting for our next leaders of our country should be a high priority on our list of things to do. After all, it is our duty as an American Citizen. Every single vote counts. Your vote will carry even more of a punch on a local level. How do you feel about your city taxes, schools or the way things run in your city?

The deadline to register is quickly approaching for most states. You can find your states deadline at RocktheVote.com . Nineteen of the states deadline is on October 6. There are a few states with a deadline of October 4 with other scattered throughout October and a few allowing registration on election day. So you see there is no time to waste here.

How do I get registered to vote?

You will need to fill out a voter registration form which you can obtain from the BMV (DMV), post office, schools or city hall. You can also go to a website like DeclareYourself.com , JustVote.org or United States Election Assistance Commission and follow the directions to fill out the form. Make sure that you sign the form before mailing. After you have completed the form, simply mail it to your state's election official at the address listed. New Hampshire and Wyoming do not accept a mailed in registration. You will have to register in person for those states. Don't forget to send in a photocopy of your government issued ID such as driver's license or passport.

Who can vote?

In order to be eligible to vote, you must be a citizen of the United States, be a minimum of 18 years old at the time of upcoming election and be a resident of the state you plan to vote in. If you have moved recently, you will need to show documents which prove you are in fact a resident of that state such as an electric bill, telephone bill, rent, etc.

You will not be eligible to vote if you are less than 18 years of age, imprisoned, a convicted felon or have been judged mentally incompetent by a court of law.

You now have all the information you need to get registered to vote. Don't delay. The deadline is near. Uphold your duty as an American Citizen, stand up for your rights and go vote for what you believe in on November 4.

Excellent article. Those that don't vote should keep their comments on the outcome to themselves. Hopefully many will see this and take your advice as voting is one of our greatest freedoms and one of our most important obligations as Americans.

I am a registered voter now, but had I seen something like this many years ago, I may have realized the importance sooner. I hope this stimulates many to move forward. Even if it's too late for some this year, there is always another chance in a few years. thanks,
