How many are there, really?

Sex offenders, we don't like to think about them. We'd like to live our lives without them, especially parents. They are a parent's worst nightmare. Yet, we need to know about them. We need to know where they are so we can protect our children from them.

So, exactly how many registered sex offenders, how many predators who stalk innocent children, are lurking around in downtown Brooklyn? Is there one...50...100?

According to City-Data.com, the population of downtown Brooklyn, based on ZIP code 11201, was estimated to be 49,038 for 2008.

If 10 percent of the population were registered sex offenders, there would be 4,930. If 1 percent of the population was sex offenders, there would be 490 sex offenders lurking around downtown.

Well, I've got good and bad news for you, downtown Brooklyn.

The good news is: There are nowhere near 490 registered sex offenders downtown. According to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, there are 17 registered sex offenders in the 11201 ZIP code area. 17! That's a minuscule percentage of the population. It sounds too good to be true.

The bad news is: There are probably many unregistered predators.

Perhaps we need a better system for keeping track of these dangerous threats to our children?

From the skyscrapers of NYC, I face strength. From the people of NYC, I gain understanding. And from the heart of NYC, I feel inspiration. So, I tend to write about the city quite a bit.  View profile

Like I was saying: Watching out for sex offenders is the wrong place to focus - focus on your kids!

"Perhaps we need a better system for keeping track of these dangerous threats to our children?"
To Everyone Reading: We've been tracking them for decades and using satellites (GPS) for the last few years, but the sex crimes keep happening don't they? California says 90% and New York says more than 95% of arrests for sex crimes are first-time-offenders! There is no way to "keep track" of anyone before they have committed the crime and that's the point - you and everyone else has their focus all wrong. Six year-old Adam Walsh was left alone at a toy display while his mother shopped out of sight. His severed head was found a few weeks later. Jaycee Dugard was kidnapped at age 11 from her school bus stop and recovered 18 years later with her two daughters by her kidnapper. Her step father saw the kidnapping, he just wasn't close enough to stop it. If the parents had watched and stayed close to their kids, those tragedies wouldn't have happened.
