Reid-Hillview Airport has a deep history with San Jose, and we, as a community, are very lucky to still have it today. Reid-Hillview Airport had recently gone through another scare of closure. Many people do not like the airport and think that it pollutes our children with the lead exhaust from the planes and that it harms the area with noise pollution. This little gem has been on the chopping block four times in the last 25 years. Thankfully, our airport is here to stay ... until the next threat. Apparently the 180 acres this airport sits on is prime real estate for the local developers.
There is a website, www.ReidHillview.com, that is a good reference for the trials and tribulations of Reid-Hillview Airport, but I do not agree with the author's views. The author lists all the reasons to close this wonderful airport. I included it because of the wealth of information as a source. I was born and raised in this wonderful city, and have been here for over 37 years, and I believe the airport is an asset, not a pollutant. Did you know that this airport was used to help our communities during our massive Loma Prieta earthquake back in 1989? I was here for it and it was not pretty. The roads to Santa Cruz and many other cities and towns near the coast were blocked and broken from the quake. Reid-Hillview Airport was used to fly relief food and supplies to those who needed it. Our little airport is not a public nuisance or a child pollutant; it is a life saving security system that, in the case of another emergency, will be needed and used to help our communities live and thrive.
