Reigning World Series of Pop Culture Champs Upset

Baltimore's Fragilay Pulls the Sucker Punch on El Chupacabra in Double Sudden Death Overtime

Everything seemed fine for the reigning champions of VH1's World Series of Pop Culture, El Chupacabra of Atlanta. Mason Spencer off the festivities in the first category of the evening with a flawless 4-0 victory during Round One of the finals in New York City.

But when Alexandra Burris of El Chupacabra lost in the next round, doubt seemed to creep into the trivia kings and the crowd started to sense the team's undoing, piece by piece.

During category three, though, Jodi Roth kept the kings ahead with a steady victory of 3-1, narrowing Fragilay's team down to one player, Tomi Hiers-Johnson.

Then it was Spencer's turn to be eliminated as the African-American trio from Maryland got a category with which they were somewhat familiar, rap stars in movies. They stormed through the category, winning 3-1 and setting up a final showdown between Hiers-Johnson and Roth.

But the final category produced no winner, as Hiers-Johnson and Roth tied at two apiece, leaving the teams to go to sudden death, in which players are asked to answer as many questions as possible regarding a particular subject until one team cannot answer.

After the first round of sudden death, no winner had been declared and so the teams went to the second round.

With the score 5-4 and El Chupacabra on the brink of elimination from the tournament, Roth stepped up to the mic but couldn't answer the question.

So there will be a new champion in the World Series of Pop Culture, as the Maryland trio now takes on Twisted Misters, NYU students who are the youngest contestants in the competition. Also appearing in the quarterfinals are the teams 3 Men and A Little Lazy, Westerberg High, Almost Perfect Strangers 2.0, Remo-Leen-Teen-Teen, Team Motherboy, and Wocka Wocka.

The winner of the tournament receives $250,000 provided by Alltel Wireless, the show's sponsor.
