That probably sounds a bit too harsh, but it's the truth. We've all been burned by someone we trusted. We've all had people do things to us that made us so angry we couldn't think straight. It's a sad fact of life that when we interact with others, we open ourselves up to getting hurt. But harboring bitterness and anger towards those who wrong us is the surest way to create an illness for yourself.
It doesn't take rocket science intelligence to see that holding onto anger and sipping the bitter juice is going to be harmful for your body in the long term. All that toxic energy and negative thinking has to go somewhere. Like the popular saying goes, "Holding on to bitterness is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die."
It's true. No matter how much someone deserves our wrath, the best gift we can give ourselves is to forgive them and look forward, not backwards. Of course it's easier in theory than in actuality, particularly if you've been cheated on, cruelly dumped or suffered physical or mental abuse at the hands of another.
Forgiveness is not easy. In fact, it is one of the hardest things we humans have to do. However, the rewards of forgiving someone far outweigh any difficulty we have in the process. When you let go of bitterness, you lighten your spirit in a way that is really difficult to describe unless you've experienced it firsthand. It is as though a giant weight that was pressing down upon you is suddenly gone.
Another reason to let go of a bitter attitude has to do with the ancient Law of Attraction, which suggests that we attract to us what we focus on. So harboring bitterness and anger is only going to draw more of those negative things into your life. At the very least, bitterness will make you feel bad about the world, bad about yourself, and suspicious of others intentions.
Regardless of whether you have a very good reason to be bitter about relationships (and you probably do or you wouldn't be bitter), you need to recognize that this outlook doesn't serve you in the long run.
Awareness is half the battle of getting rid of bitterness. The other half is a conscious effort to choose happiness, every single day. When you choose the thoughts that make you feel better about yourself and more trusting of relationships, eventually you will BE happy and hopeful instead of sad and bitter. I promise!
