Relationships with Doctors

Physicians Help in Many Ways Depending on Medical Treatment Needed

Sondra C
Relationships between patient and doctors should be open communication. The patient should freely explain their pain or discomfort. If an illness is explained properly, doctors can help make the patient feel better.

Visiting a Medical Doctor

Patients have long been told that they should establish a relationship with their doctor. They should speak freely about pain or discomfort in any part of their body without embarrassment. This is the only way that a doctor can help, alleviate or cure the problem. The proper way to prepare for a physical checkup is by keeping a list of all pain, discomfort or abnormalities to any part of the body. Make sure to bring the list of ailments to the doctor on the medical examination appointment date to establish a relationship with the doctor.

Visiting a Dentist

Not all doctors take care of the body. Dentists are doctors that care for the teeth and mouth related diseases. Regular checkups with dentists are important and many, who fear the thought of going to a dentist, put off an examination until they get a toothache. It is important for gum and teeth care to establish a relationship with the doctor

Years ago dental visits were painful. However, that has changed, and in most cases patients feel little pain or discomfort. Latest methods used by modern day dentists keep the patient pain free. Usually, a dental visit can be comfortable when the patient stops thinking of the pain that used to be, and in most cases, is no more. There are dentists who practice various types of dentistry and are known as dental specialists.

Relationships between patient and dentists must be based on trust. Not all dental visits involved a toothache or oral pain. A basic dental visit will include a cleaning, examination and x-rays. This could be costly depending on the dentist and whether they are offering a new patient special. Dental x rays can only be interpreted by the dentist and a hygienist. Some dentists specialize in dentistry for children.

Visiting a Chiropractic Physician

Chiropractor relationships are different. In this case, a patient is pain from a pulled muscle, sciatica, stiff neck due to lifting improperly, bending over while gardening or sleeping the wrong way. A Chiropractor is not a licensed medical doctor, he is a licensed Chiropractic Physician. He cannot prescribe medication.

Finding a Chiropractor who can help is not easy. Chiropractic treatment varies depending on the source of the pain, the intensity and the type of chiropractic treatment. There are many methods of chiropractic manipulation. All first Chiropractic visits require an x ray of the back prior to manipulation to make sure there is no medical reason for the back pain.

I believe in Chiropractic manipulation. I have been going to various chiropractors over the years. I find that chiropractic manipulation helps relieve my sciatic pain.

Relationships between chiropractors, like medical physicians is based on trust. The treatment is considered to be successful if their treatment offers a patient relief. Some have the patient sign a contract for a specified amount of weekly treatments. This makes it difficult to leave if the chiropractic treatment is not helping.

To Sum It Up

Relationships between physicians of all types are based on honesty and trust. Frankly speaking, I believe a patient should have a say in their treatment, and the physician should listen unless it is a serious condition.

Patients should be allowed to see another doctor for a second opinion. For a physician to push their opinions on a patient and not allow the patient to question their course of treatment, is inconceivable.

I have changed chiropractors in mid-treatment if I felt they were not relieving the pain. I searched for a chiropractor who used another type chiropractic method. Eventually the pain was alleviated, but never completely gone. Sciatic pain is difficult to eliminate.

I agree, patients should have some say in their medical care. As for dentists, they still hurt.

Great idea, a relationship with doctors, but often that is difficult. I'm always afraid when I go to the dentist although I am never hurt.

I still do have pain at the dentist. I concentrate on my big toe to get my mind off the pain while the dentist works.

Fortunately, I've had the same doctor and dentist long-term, and they know me. Good points.
