Relationships: Preparing for Your First Meeting with the Family

Have you been going steady with someone really special but have not really met his or her family? If you have been invited to meet the family for the first time, do not run and take cover. Although meeting the family for the first time could be very uncomfortable, you should always bear in mind that they would not really eat you alive or throw you out of the house just because you turned out to be somebody whom they think is not good enough for their son or daughter.

Now, if you are meeting the family for the first time, you should make sure that you make a good impression. If your partner belongs to a big family which gathers around for events, you should ask your partner to show you some family pictures and tell you the names of the different members of the family. It would be a good idea for you to be familiar with the faces and the names of the members of the family before you get to meet them so that you will not have any trouble matching names and faces.

Make sure also to ask your partner the traits and characters of each family member so that you will what to expect. You might also want to ask your partner which family member would probably take you under his or wings once you get there so that you can plan out where and whom to turn to just in case. If there are certain traditions that the family follows, you should learn everything about these traditions so that you will be able to fit in nicely. On the other hand, if there are some family feuds that you should know about, be sure to know everything there is to know so that you will not be unwittingly caught in the crossfire.

After learning the different traits and characters of the family members, you should make sure to get them "new meeting" gifts that suit their taste. Ask your partner to help you pick out the gifts so that you will not spend so much time wracking your brains as what tot give to each family member. Also, you should check you list twice to make sure that you did not miss anybody. The worst thing that you could do is to forget to but a gift for one of the most important members of the family. You do not really want to hurt somebody's feelings especially when you just met him or her for the first time.
