Great Relaxing Hobbies for Women: Cross-stitch
I was taught how to cross-stitch by my mother when I was in middle school and found it very easy to take up. I enjoyed creating little cross-stitch Christmas ornaments, or other fun projects, in the quiet of my room before going to bed, or even while casually watching television.
There are several different kinds of cross-stitch patterns out there, and many of them come in little kits that even include the embroidery thread needed to complete the project. If you think that this relaxing hobby for women is one that you would be interested in taking up, then check out what your local craft store, or even the local fabric store. You should look for a cross-stitch kit that comes complete with everything that you will need. If you aren't sure what kind of kit to get, then ask for help from an employee, they should be able to help you find a great cross-stitch kit for beginners. Another great thing about this relaxing hobby for women is how inexpensive it can be, with many smaller kits being under $10.
Great Relaxing Hobbies for Women: Knit or Crochet
Even though I haven't learned either of these relaxing hobbies for women, I know them to be relaxing because my mother took up crocheting hot pads when she was home sick with cancer, something that she found helped her deal with the stress of her illness.
Not only can you make items for yourself while enjoying these relaxing hobbies, you can also make some great and inexpensive gifts for others like baby blankets, scarves, etc. Local craft and fabric stores are great places to to find everything that you need for this hobby, and if you have a local Jo-Ann craft store, they probably offer classes to help you learn how to knit or crochet. There are some stores that are dedicated solely to these two hobbies, and workers who can help you learn about them. If you can't find a local class you can purchase books and even DVDs to help you learn.
Great Relaxing Hobbies for Women: Sewing
If you are fairly patient and enjoy modifying your clothing to make it your own, then sewing can be a great relaxing hobby for women. I was taught how to sew at a fairly young age, around fifth grade, and have enjoyed it ever since. When my siblings and I were young my mother would sew us Halloween costumes, clothes, and she would also sew crib sheets for local charities.
Sewing does require a bit of patience, especially when you are first learning. I find it quite simple to make my own patterns (many in my head) for purses, messenger bags, and pillows. Once you get the hang of simpler things like those I just listed you can start to try your hand at patterns, there are many out there that are simple and made for beginners. Just like with knitting and crocheting, Jo-Ann fabrics usually offers classes for beginning to advance seamstresses. Sewing is both relaxing and rewarding and another great hobby that makes it possible for you to make some great and inexpensive gifts for others. My grandma, for example, makes quilts for each member of the family, in fact, that was the first thing she said when I told her that I was expecting my first child.
Great Relaxing Hobbies for Women: Blog
There is something truly therapeutic about sitting down at the computer and typing anything and everything that comes to mind. You can set your blog's privacy settings so that everyone in the world can view your blog, or you can set them so that only you and those you choose can view it. You can choose a theme for your blog or you can simply write about a wide range of topics.
If you enjoy journaling but can't seem to write as fast as the thoughts come to you then try blogging. You can check out some free blogging websites like WordPress, Xanga, LiveJournal, or Blogger. I enjoy blogging at WordPress, though I have also used LiveJournal. You will want to check out all these websites before deciding on one since they all offer different themes and features for your blog. The best part of this relaxing hobby for women is that it is free!
Great Relaxing Hobbies for Women: Educational Reading
I am a knowledge junkie, which is what lead me to one of my favorite, and longest lasting relaxing hobbies, educational reading. Sure, I enjoy fiction books, but I have found something truly rewarding and relaxing in educational reading. I personally enjoy reading about black history, WWII, and the dirty little secrets of different aspects of society.
Now, I don't simply sit down with a book and read until I make myself sleepy, I take advantage of the time that I have the bedroom to myself and turn the television off, curl up in bed with the blanket all to myself and dig into my book for a good couple of hours. The nice quiet, knowing that I am taking the time to educate myself on a topic, and being able to hog the covers are what makes this hobby most relaxing for me. Another aspect of educational reading that makes it such a great relaxing hobby is the plethora of topics out there that you can choose to learn about and how exciting it can make a trip to the bookstore. If there is something out there that you have always wanted to learn about, then go ahead and give this relaxing hobby for women a try.
