Getting Relief from Anxiety through Thought Stopping
Getting relief from anxiety through thought stopping means that when you start to think about something that you know will bring you down a path of worry, fear, and anxiety, you need consciously tell yourself to stop thinking about it. The theory behind this sounds easy enough but just as you suspect, it's not so easily done.
Thought stopping is not one of those things that you can use one time and it will banish your anxiety forever. It's a learned response and it takes some time to train your mind. It may not work the first time you try it but as you consciously start to do it more and more, you will find your brain is responding to your demands easier, giving you some relief from your anxiety.
How to Use Thought Stopping in Anxiety
There are probably many anxiety-producing things in your life. The first thing you want to do is figure out what is the main anxiety culprit. Usually, when someone has a lot of anxiety, it roots from one place and then infiltrates the rest of his or her life. The best way to identify where your anxiety comes from is to keep a journal. Write down everything you do throughout the day and how you feel about it. There's a good chance you will be able to pinpoint exactly where you start to feel anxious in the course of your day.
After finding out what you need to work on, you have to start working on it. When something comes up and you start thinking about all the 'what ifs', stop what you are doing and tell yourself to stop that thought process. You may have trouble getting your mind off it and in that case, go and do something else. You may have to start talking to someone else or you may simply just need to leave the situation. When you come back, your thoughts may return but not at the intensity they were before. This time, it may much easier for you to stop them by simply telling yourself to STOP.
Try doing it today. When you start your snowball of worry, start telling yourself to stop before it becomes too big. It takes practice but soon you will notice that your thoughts will not accumulate as they do now.
