The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is one of the largest and most effective disaster relief agencies in the world. ADRA Australia is taking the initiative and taking the lead in coordinating ADRA's relief effort in Japan. ADRA Australia's mission is working with people in poverty and distress to develop just and positive change through empowering partnerships with people and responsible action.
Their values are compassion, respect, integrity, transparency, and collaboration. Their goals are to enhance relationships with partners, facilitate community, reduce conflict, hardship and poverty, and improve the quality of life. They strive to excel in everything they do.
ADRA in Japan
In response to the devastation in Japan, ADRA is on the ground aiding the people of Japan. ADRA is working with local authorities to develop a truly historic relief and rebuilding program.
ADRA staff rushed to the hardest hit Sendai City to assess the situation, and coordinate a plan of action with the Japan National Disaster Office, National Civic Force officers, as well as other government and aid agencies. ADRA Japan has been serving miso, a traditional Japanese soup, to hundreds of evacuees in Sendai City. For evacuees staying at the center, it was the first hot meal they had since the earthquake hit.
ADRA Australia, ADRA International, as well as offices in the ADRA global network have pledged their support for the effort.
ADRA staff provided food and shelter in Toyko immediately after the earthquake hit. Now they are working to ensure that future needs are met.
High magnitude aftershocks disrupted relief efforts after the earthquake and tsunami of March 11. The Japanese government estimates that more than 1,500 have died and more than 10,000 are still missing. Close to 400,000 evacuees have hit the emergency centers and water and food supplies are stretched thin.
