At anytime that you have a severe headache that will not quit or causes flashes of light, vomiting, extreme pain or numbness you should seek medical attention immediately.
Feverfew is a very popular herbal remedy for migraine headaches. It controls the inflammation that constricts blood vessels in the head, and prevents blood vessel spasms which may contribute to headaches.
White willow bark is a popular herb for headache because it works much like an aspirin, relieving your headache pain and causing the inflammation to go down. Preliminary research suggests that white willow bark extracts have analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and fever lowering effects. Like aspirin or any painkiller, it should only be taken on a short term basis.
Note: Always check with your doctor before taking willow with other painkillers and medications!
Peppermint has been used as a headache remedy for hundreds of years. You can drink peppermint tea or inhale peppermint oil. Peppermint should be used with caution if you have heartburn or similar stomach acid problems.
Passionflower is a calming herb when taken as a tea before bedtime it is relaxing and will induce sleep It is also believed to have anti-inflammatory and pain killing properties. Great for a migraine!
Ginkgo biloba is said to improve the flow of blood and get more oxygen to the brain, not only relieving headache but also improving memory and alertness. Ginkgo biloba also helps maintain peripheral circulation to the arms, legs and brain.
Note: Ginkgo is an herb that can cause problems when taken with other headache medications, including aspirin and lithium.
Cayenne and capsicum are excellent for the treatment of cluster headaches, and it is often used as a nasal spray. Cayenne may also lessen migraine headaches and is an excellent spice to have on hand.
Bayberry, basil and blessed thistle are all very helpful for sinus headaches.
Always check with your doctor, before using any herbal treatments. It is possible that some herbs may cause problems when taken with other medications.
