I tried a number of different medicines and even tried honey to calm my coughs. Vicks 44 failed, Dimetapp failed, Robitussin failed, and Halls cough drops failed. The nighttime medicines like Theraflu did manage to get me very drowsy and eventually to sleep, but I would eventually wake up coughing after the medicine wore off.
After all that, I decided to try Tylenol Cold Multi-Symptom Severe. While it was not a miracle cure, although it did seem to help, despite its similar medicinal contents to the other medicines I tried. In liquid form, it tasted a lot better than the other medicines with its flavor called CitrusBurst. As soon as you take it, you can feel it working to temporarily relieve any throat irritation. It's a non-drowsy formula and is bright orange in color.
It contains 325 mg of Acetaminophen to relieve your fever, headache, and/or sore throat. For a cough suppressant, it uses 10 mg of Dextromethorphan HBr, an ingredient used in most cold medicines. To relieve any chest congestion it uses 200 mg of the expectorant Guaifenesin and 5 mg of Phenylephrine HCI for any nasal congestion.
The combination of these ingredients does seem to relieve most of my symptoms; however, nothing was able to completely eliminate my throat irritation and coughing for any stretch of time - a need that cannot be met by any medicine over the counter to date. I did find that it helped loosen the congestion I was having and made my coughs more "productive" just as it claims on the bottle. Taken every 4 hours, Tylenol Cold is also effective in relieving any congestion and minor pain or fever. Overall, I feel that Tylenol Cold Multi-Symptom Severe was the most effective medicine I used for my cold symptoms. It costs on average about six dollars and can be found online as well in most drug stores and retail chains like Wal-Mart.
