Relieve Stress at Work: A Simple Guide

Greg Smith
If you're anything like me, stress on the job is a killer... literally. This isn't limited just to those who are less than satisfied with their job choice. It also affects those who absolutely love their jobs. Too much pressure and stress in the workplace can really bring down not only your health but your mental status as well. This can be attributed to unrelenting bosses, co-workers who are sometimes mean for no reason or having to rush to deal with air tight deadlines.

Some of the symptoms of stress becoming overbearing could be a tightness of neck muscles. Also taking shallow breaths, falling sick often and shortened attention span could be signs. A couple of tell tale signs that stress is starting to become a major issue are sudden intense headaches and pain in the small of your back. These are all related issues that could be attributed to stress.
But there is a way to deal with these issues and relieve some of the pressure they cause.

Here are a few tips you can use to help combat stress.

Pull yourself away from work into a quiet area and take some deep breaths. Breathe in slowly for a count of four and then breathe out even slower for a count of eight. This will allow fresh oxygen to enter your body while removing stale oxygen at the same time. Your body will be refreshed and your muscles energized from the intake of the oxygen.

When on your lunch breaks or any other breaks, completely remove yourself from your work. Find a book to read or focus on something completely unrelated to work. If you're on a break with a co-worker, make it a point to not discuss work or any other stressful topic.

If you don't already, stay away from caffeine, sugar and other unnatural stimulants. These tend to work only for a short while and then leave you crashing for the rest of the day. Drink plenty of water and make sure you take a good multi-vitamin everyday. If possible, get an extra dose of vitamins c and B12. These help keep up your body's immune system and provide for a natural energy boost

Finally, find an outlet outside of work. Exercise is a great reliever of the daily stress. If not exercise, find something you enjoy that helps remove stress from a long hard day and place your concentration on that. Stay away from alcohol and any other types of recreational drugs, as they tend to deteriorate the body faster than normal.

Using these tips should help in your fight against stress.
