"No, you're wrong!"
"No way, man! You're wrong!"
These two undercurrents of life have been feuding since the dawn of consciousness. And for the people sitting on the fence, it seems like it'll never end. My own beliefs don't really matter here, what matters here is compromise. When I ask people to understand both sides of the story, I get bombarded with "No." Does bickering answer any questions about the meaning of life? They have a lot in common- An ideal, a need to discover, seeking a higher meaning- but overall they repel each other entirely.
The general consensus of the scientific side is that Religion is a illogical view of the universe that ignores fact for faith. Religion says that Science is basically steering people away from the one truth. I have talked to hundreds of people that adamantly represent both factions. But I never hear those people coming to a broad conclusion.
Each end of the spectrum will defend their beliefs until something ends it all. Science dismisses the suggestion of an afterlife and Religion suggests that Science is going to hell. Can't people keep their own opinions? The be all and end all is that no one truly knows which side of the fence we should all be on.
Compromise would instantly make this world a better place and arguing over who is right and who is wrong is an uncivil nightmare. I would love to see what would happen if one side gave up their views and ideals and agreed with the others. I'm sure it they would be greeted with a resounding "Told ya' so!" Sounds like playground nonsense. It's time to grow up.

Post a CommentI think it was a good and rather appropriate article. C. Nagel, you may appreciate one I wrote about the first two chapters of Genesis, in an attempt to reconcile what many people often believe to be irreconcilable. Here's a link to it: - http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/257018/genesis_chapter_1_is_a_myth.html
- At the same time, Jeff isn't completely correct, science and religion HAVEN'T always been at odds. If he'd look at the history of science, he'd see that the modern scientific method as well as the basics of biology, physics, etc., were all created by Christian who searched for natural truth and order as they figured would be demonstrated by a Creator who was also orderly. Anyway, thanks for sharing, keep up the good work.
Perhaps compromise is too strong I word, I agree. Bickering is a waste of time - was my main idea. Thx for ur opinion.
You should have went with your first instinct and not written this tripe. Can't people keep their own opinions? Science is about fact and what can be proven and seeking proof for that which cannot yet.
You are right about one thing-science and religion have always been at odds with each other. And at every challenge, every turn, science has been right. The earth wasn't flat, or the center of the universe, etc..etc..for anyone to suggest a "compromise" is idiotic. What is science supposed to say? "You half right, the earth is only 6,000 years old, but it's not flat!" If any person wants to believe mythology that's one thing, but don't try to dumb down the segment of society who knows that science ins't open to individual interpretation..
