Religion in Social Media

Automated Postings and Questionable Information

April Higney
As I journey into writing, expressing in many aspects set to inspire peoples hearts, from facing harsh realities, getting through them, to realism, to surrealism, to more spiritual based nature contributions, as well as basic articles about travel, parenting, etc. I attempt to promote, the best way I can.

One territory I have stepped into in distributing my content to the social world has been Twitter. Of course it has a well known reputation, and many in the same position as myself have found themselves there. Though I have not been there long, and I could not access "Tweetdeck", I figured it would be a great way to somehow market myself in the creative writer's world. Unfortunately this has not really been the case. I have acquired a great following of many inspirational persons, resources, and content links that I can access and enjoy in, but marketing words is not so easy.

The downside I have really encountered much to my dismay is that many followers have become either fearful of clicking on links, or they were sent to follow via keyword searches, or just follow because another person is following. In my case, admittedly my views are not based on any particular religious beliefs. I do however believe in a creator, and do not partake in specific books. I'm not a hater of religion, in fact, very much enjoy in many aspects of ALL types. I surround myself in as many things that are considered to be loving and healthy, fun, and humorous too, but also the realities of the world in life, as well as in death and loss, that can be somewhat saddening. By far my beliefs are very spiritual, enjoying in nature, and planetary connections, and being human, making mistakes, but at least having a conscience in being aware of those mistakes. I don't think I'll burn for having a tattoo or having smoked a cigarette in my lifetime. I don't believe that everything in this life is contained in text that was in effect written and re-written by the hand of man. Again these are meant only as a personal belief and by far I do not impose my lifestyle to another. I say if you believe in something follow it with your heart. If you've found something that effects you in a comforting manner by every means go with it, and that view cannot be wrong, if it is in fact something that has touched you in a profound manner.

In the light of the Twitter world, I type in my content, which may or may not contain some form of spiritual notion in poetry, and I am granted followers. The same for any content typed for media, or politics, then again if you mention the word passion, expect some triple x and or a spammer category follower.

For the most part I get some great spiritual followers, and then I get religious followers, but many are automated and not even human, with words expelled from their religious books and views. I'm human, and definitely no saint, or angel, but in seeing this, and attempting to say hello or tweet in some form of smile, or how are you today, there is nothing but silence, and the continuation of quotes posted. It is almost eerie, much like those knocks on the door that sometimes I just don't feel like answering because I've just stepped out of the shower or I'm in the middle of chasing my 3 year old through the house trying to get her dressed, but at least those knocks are human bearing smiles. Sometimes its like going to church but not being there really, quite a displacement.

Looking deeper into the social media enterprise I find more and more automated religious content, like trying to enforce a specific viewpoint, and when you're on there, based in attempting to get those sought-after needed clicks, and no one is clicking, it makes one really wonder where the PEOPLE are behind the followers/followings, or if you wanted to step in with one of those religious aspects, no one is there! If leading someone to the light, at least be there standing before it to take someone's hand and guide. It makes me question: Does Twitter have a religion all its own?

This is just a personal opinion and by far am not knocking a specific group, but more generalizing the aspects of it, and where the social media can sometimes designate upon. It is not just religion, there are whole enterprises, businesses set to auto, pulling in hapless viewers, but in the mainstream, the typical human force, attempting to gain an avenue like in a creative writers' world, or small businesses trying to gain attention to their market products by placing their links and websites to influence, it tends to fall short. Without the much needed clicks, and of course a robot is not going to click on those links, dependency upon this is much less than what it really could be, and of course it can be possibly in the future.

I do continue upon my journey into the realm of Twitter, not based upon clicks, but more based upon quotes, viewing things that others believe in, some much needed information that can guide me in the technological world and computers, design elements, or other things to influence and inspire some writing content of my own, and just handful of some real people out there socially networking, like other writers I've come to know on Associated Content and/or varying locations to which I've viewed upon the web and stepped into.

Have you been on Twitter? What are your views in the social media enterprise? I'd love to hear your comments!

Very interesting. I got caught up in the numbers game and followed everyone back. Then it stopped mattering so much because there ARE lots of bots there. I have not made up my mind about Religion yet but have been doing a lot of thinking on it of late.

April, you know how I feel about the auto-bots. It is refreshing to find real people with real thoughts - even if you don't agree with everything you read. Far better than some robot churning out incessant religious messages with nobody there to respond to.

Cathy A Montville, I love that attitude in your comment! Because you are so REAL!!! Especially in the P.S. I smoke and I believe in ghosts. It really puts a smile on my face in that respect! As I already hold you in admiration!

I cannot possibly find the extra time in a day that it takes to hang out on Twitter and Facebook! I do promote my work on Facebook and some of the others like Stumbleupon, but I cannot hang there for lack of an extra minute in the day! This is a great observation aout the social networking sites and of course people in general! PS...I smoke and believe in ghosts!
