Religion and Spirituality, with a Paradigm Shift

Yvonne M. Glasgow, Ph.D.
Religion, spirituality and science all have some stake of claim in the world of health care. All three are huge parts of health cares history throughout the world. Although they don't always work well together they can, if blended in the right way. Religion, which is ones belief in how humans came into existence, is a way of worship. With worship and prayer it is believed by many that God(s) will help heal and cure. It is the faith in this system that makes it work for those people, if you believe something enough it will happen to you. Spirituality, th act of being spiritual, is a way to bring the soul into light. It is related to religion, in some ways, but spirituality can stand on it's own without religion also. Science is the study of the natural and physical world. It is basically the opposite of religion, where religion is just based on faith that someone put us here science delves into how we got here with experimentation.

In health, religion and spirituality, as I mentioned above, work to heal with prayer and faith. Meditation can be thought of as a spiritual act. Meditation can use acts such as visualization, where people go into a sort of a meditative trance and visual themselves or their world as they want it. It is calming and relaxing and it is also said that if you believe in something enough it CAN do good things for you. One of the best things that religion and spirituality can do for all is to give you something positive to use in your outlook on life. There are people out there with debilitating diseases and life threatening cancers that live their lives on the positive side because of belief and prayer, they may be dying, but they feel they are in the right hands and therefore they are not afraid.

With the above in mind, we can integrate both religion and spirituality with science as part of a paradigm shift into Holistic healing. How can this happen, you ask? Well, first you need to understand what a paradigm shift is and what exactly Holistic healing entails. A paradigm shift can be thought of as an adjustment or change in the one way thinks in relation to a topic and how they approach that topic. It a different way to view a scientific theory. Holistic healing focuses on the whole, mind, body AND spirit. Instead of focusing on one part of an illness it focuses on the whole thing, cause AND effect. Just in that definition we see how blending these 3 together can be thought of as a paradigm shift. If you view science, religion and spirituality as one whole when healing and this is something you hadn't thought of before, then you have experienced a paradigm shift. Holistic healing blends all three with alternative healing.

A model of complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) can serve as an example of a paradigm shift also. A model is a prototype, an example, so to speak. Complementary and alternative medicines can include massage, acupuncture, chiropractic care, herbalism, homeopathy and even aromatherapy. These healing methods blended with regular western medicine can be viewed as a paradigm shift, a new way of viewing our normal thoughts on health care. They are complementary as that they work well with these other treatments to treat the whole mind, body and soul. If you have a back problem you normally go to your physician and he gives you some pain pills. All those pain pills do is mask your pain, they don't get rid of the problem. But if you then go to a Chiropractor, where they will adjust the issues connected to your spine that are causing your back pain, then you have covered both the cause AND effect of your ailment by blending two ways of medicine that have been kept a

In conclusion, we can see how changing ones point of thinking can give one more opportunities in thought and in healing. By blending different ways of thinking we can heal ourselves in better ways, whole body rather than just the effects of our illnesses.
