Religious Craft for Sunday School: Faux Stained Glass

Pam Gaulin
Toddlers 18 months and up can make a religious stained glass craft paper craft, inspired by stained glass windows in churches. This religious craft for toddlers 18 months and up will take some preparation by parents, educators, or caregivers. It can be framed using craft sticks or hung up in a window. This is an easy

Age Group: This arts and crafts idea can be made by toddlers who are 18 months and up.

Materials for the Stained Glass Color Craft

Parents will need to cut up sheets of bright tissue paper into small rectangles. The shapes and sizes should be easy to pick up for the toddler, who will more than likely grab a handful of these little rectangles. Any iridescent tissue paper would look great!

Colors of tissue paper that can be used to make the religious stained glass craft include:
bright yellow
red
blue
purple
green
gold
silver

For each craft, parents will need to cut out one stained glass frame. Cut a square out of a piece of construction paper, by cutting off three and half inches form the length of a an 8 1/2 by 11 sized piece of black construction paper

- safety scissors
- two sheets of clear laminating paper

Cutting the "Glass"

The tissue paper should be cut into small squares of paper, about the size of a large eraser. The tissue paper squares do not have to be exactly the same size, but they should be close.

Making the Frame

1. Take the black square you cut out the construction Paper. Fold it in half.
2. Now fold that in half two more times.
3. Unfold the square.
4. Take one piece of the clear laminating sheet and press the black "window frame" into the paper.
5. Next, take the corners of the laminate down, sticky side up, to the table.

Another option is to cut the construction paper frame into a recognizable religious shape of your choice. Find a large stencil, or an image from a book or online. Trace the outline of the shape, and use that religious shape as the frame for this toddler craft.

Let the Toddler Decorate

- Place a pile of the tissue paper squares near the toddler. Show the toddler how to drop the squares onto the paper.

- When the toddler is done, cover the tissue paper side of the religious craft with a second sheet of laminate.

- Make a small hole in the top and tie a piece of yarn.

- Hang the religious craft in a window which receives a lot of light.
