Religious Extremists like Kirk Cameron & Ray Comfort Threaten Schools, Our Health & Ourselves

Religious Extremists Endanger Art, Free Expression & Science

My recent article on Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort elicited many comments. I'm glad to see most agreed with the premise of my piece - religious extremists can't smear people like Charles Darwin, yet hope people still respect them after such desperate, deceitful measures. In fact, many Christians agreed with me. They hate extremists like Cameron speaking for them. I'd like to expand on that premise, and emphasize the dangerous lies religious extremists concoct to gain support from those who are either uneducated, or too lazy to use a PC, or visit a library to do basic research.

Regarding charges of Darwin as racist or a misogynist, one only must Google to learn there are absolutely no credible books or articles supporting these outrageous claims. That Adolph Hitler used tangential threads to 'social Darwinism' - something only called after Darwin, but bearing no real connection to his revelatory work - does no discredit to the man nor science. Many historians refute Jesus Christ, pointing out there's no real unbiased documentation of his existence, however this won't sway Christians from believing. Why can Cameron and Comfort attack a man like Darwin - one we all plainly know lived and contributed an enormous amount to human wisdom - yet if it's charged Jesus Christ never lived, since there's no factual evidence of his living, there's outrage?

Extreme Christians are pro-life, who don't support abortion, nor politicians who are pro-choice. They believe homosexuals commit evil acts by simply following a biological directive, proven to exist in many animal species. I'd say it's a safe bet extremists would not vote for openly gay politicians. Further, even stem cells, which deliver real health cures, and promise much more, are tainted with a 'moral cloud', because some research involves embryonic tissues from an aborted fetus.

Now we can see clearly defined acts, or people of a certain political persuasion, and how it impacts an extreme Christian viewpoint. How this in turn affects a political landscape and our shared social fabric, etc. What disturbs me perhaps most of all though, is a more subtle way religious extremists foul society with inflexible and damaging proclamations. I speak of a child born of extreme types suffering intellectually under such iron fisted parenting. Let's perform mental gymnastics. Albert Einstein was famed for his thought experiments, which led to his brilliant relativity theories which changed our world. So, here are a few thought experiments worth doing.

Bill Gates - father of the PC. Windows frustrates, it may still crash, but without Microsoft, it's arguable we'd still be using typewriters and dedicated calculators. The revolution was born of science - real science which Gates embraced. Now, I know nothing of his personal spirituality, however this much is knowable. If Mr. Gates was told his work was "blasphemous' - if an adult or teacher in his life had forbid his computer work because it clashed with extreme religious tenets, our world would be a much different place.

Elvis Presley - father of Rock N Roll. Rock is deemed "devil music" - and the way in which Elvis swiveled his hips was reviled by religious extremists. If Elvis had listened, our iPod playlists would be a lot different. It applies to other musicians too. They were influenced by the King of Rock N Roll - just as Elvis was influenced by musicians who rejected labels of making 'evil music' - so to express musically and make our world a happy and hipper place. Sadly, extreme Christians still call music evil. If it were up to them, nobody would sing, sell songs or buy music dvds. We'd all save our money and give it to an extremist church I suppose.

Extreme religion threatens health. We've known now for decades regular sexual activity is healthy for our bodies and our minds. It didn't take Dr. Ruth or Dr. Phil to remind us that when our basic sexual needs are met, it helps our mood and attitude. Without regular sexual release for both men and women, health problems arise. For religious extremists, sex is only for marriage and procreation. If it were up to them, we'd all be married with many children. Those unlucky enough to find a husband or wife, would be banned from sex, their health degraded from lack of sexual activity. Clearly, it's a fact why extremists are dangerous, for our healthy minds and bodies.

One final thought experiment: Imagine the collective strength of our country, who aren't religious extremists, banding together to go into Cameron and Comfort's Way Of The Master Church. During a service, we'd protest loudly how damaging twisting of the bible is in our lives. I must do this as a thought experiment, however Cameron and Comfort and others like them do the opposite in reality. They actually go into schools, demanding a proven and logical discipline like Evolution be stricken from the curriculum.

Christian brothers and sisters, I implore you. Take back your church from extremists like Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort. Your children, your selves and all of us will benefit. We'll live less stressful lives and respect each other more, when extreme religious types like Cameron and Comfort are stopped from deceptively smearing scientists like Charles Darwin, or anyone else who dares to disagrees with them.

You hit the nail on the head on all these important points. I pray that my children and grandchildren don't grow up in an America that is held hostage by bible thumpers. You can be a Christian, or a Catholic, Jew or Muslim and not be an extreme and hateful person.

I just don't see how America can EVER compete with the rest of the world in the realm of science when we constantly deny the most FUNDAMENTAL basis of biology, which itself touches the field of genetics, medicine and countless other scientific pursuits. If America chooses to deny and belittle evolution, we will continue to see our medical innovations wither and die on the vine.

Copernicus was imprisoned as a heretic for having the gall to say the universe was not indeed geocentric. People from some of my old churches out and out got in the pulpit and called science "the devil's way of turning America from God", but they sure enjoyed the cars, televisions, computers, and cel phones that science gave them. Remember Einstein's quote; "Religion without science is blind and science without religion is lame".

PS: No one ever gets threir mind changed through argument or debate - unless they are open to having it changed!

My Christian background tells me to not make false witness against my neighbor. For Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort to do that sing against Charles Darwin is reason enough for me to reject them.

Randy, it's not about God being in the schools. It's about someone like Kirk Cameron taking EVOLUTION out of the SCHOOLS. That's what everyone is getting upset about. As for God being in the schools, theology and other things is fine. School prayer is another issue - better saved for another article/debate. But I'm concerned with our science or history being chipped away by evolution being called 'invalid.' That's the main issue here.

To put as clear a point on this as possible - this article was about religious extremists in general. I merely used Kirk Cameron & Ray Comfort as example, because their words and the "Origin of Species" book give away has incited much anger. You can find religious extremists everywhere - not just on the right. And once again, this has nothing to do with politics - it may cross and overlap - but if someone like Kirk Cameron smears someone, his whole church or affiliated group shouldn't pay the price. As is evidenced by the comments on my original article, Christians most of all are upset by Kirk Cameron & Ray Comforts actions.
