Back in World War II and during the Cold War, it was not uncommon to see the yellow background with black triangle signs denoting the locations of fallout shelters that were in different buildings in and around Ferndale. The buildings could range from schools to hospitals to municipal buildings.
The fallout shelters were part of the Civil Defense program that was so prevalent during World War II. They were stocked with Civil Defense supplies as well as food and water for residents should there be any reason for them to need the shelters.

Some of these items, as well as documentation and other historical memorabilia, can be seen at the Ferndale Historical Society at 1651 Livernois.
