Mad Men Season 3 was set in 1963 and presented viewers a unique opportunity to relive the events of that era through the eyes of the shows incredible cast of characters. We mourned again with them as they witnessed the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963 followed by the shooting of his assassin Lee Harvey Oswald a few days later.
Perhaps it's the slow pace of the show that adds to the realism that has driven the popularity of Mad Men over the past three seasons. Baby boomers can watch Mad Men each week and recall wearing clothes much like those that Betty Draper (January Jones) wears so divinely on the show, And, there is no denying that the dashing Don Draper (Jon Hamm) may be the sexiest man alive as we watch him escape the pressures of his busy Madison Ave. Advertising Career by falling into the arms of one woman after another in passionate love scenes.
Mad Men combines an amazing cast with near historically accurate wardrobe and scenery to make the show truly compelling. Although they may have gone overboard with the constant smoking and drinking, viewers can't help but marvel at how much the world has changed in the past 50 years. It's funny to think that there could have ever been a day when you could pour a cocktail at your desk at 8 AM or light up a cigarrete not only at your desk but also at the doctors office!
This season, viewers are wondering what new products Don Draper will represent at the new Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce Advertising Agency. Last year we saw his company create advertising for Pampers , The Hilton, and TWA as well as some products that didn't survive the sixties.
In Season 4 we'll surely find our Mad Men friends somewhere in the year 1964. Betty Draper will be building a new life following her quick divorce possibly with her Season 3 heart throb Henry Francis (Christopher Stanley) and though we know Don Draper's future will include building a business, he'll surely find some new romantic interests as well. Since Mad Men tends to follow actual historical events as the characters grow and change with the times we can expect Mad Men in Season 4 may show us the birth of the Beatle's Era as well as a growing Civil Rights Movement.
Perhaps my favorite character of the Mad Man cast is Peggy Olson, secretary turned copy writer. As a woman in what has always been a man's world, Peggy exemplifies the woman;s movement of the 1960's as she struggles to prove she can do the same work as a man . Perhaps before the end of Season 4 we may just get an opportunity to see our Peggy in a mini-skirt. Then again, that may be better suited for the shows naughty girl and voluptuous red head, Joan Harris (Christina Hendricks.)
