Whether you are relocating cross country out of desire or for a new job that is not paying for your relocation expenses there are a couple of great tips for cutting costs when relocating at your own expense. More and more companies are eliminating the perk of paying for relocation which is sometimes a deal breaker for a lot of people. When you need the job in a soft job market there may be no other option but to finance your own relocation. If you find yourself in this situation there are several relocation cost savings tips.

You should have a few weeks at least to plan your relocation allowing a window to do a little research on the cost of moving trucks, packing supplies, and fuel consumption of your cross country trip. One of the first things to consider is that the more possessions you have the larger the truck you will need. This is the time to eliminate clutter and go through all of your personal belongings. Don't pack things that you will get rid of at your down line destination. This is especially true of furniture and other bulky items. The smaller the truck the less fuel you will use which will definitely affects the cost of your relocation.

There are a number of truck rental companies available for rent but doing the proper research will save you a ton of money. There are occasional specials for rentals on weekends and through various holiday periods that are considered off peak when truck rentals are less. If you know ahead of time that you will be relocating sign up online with the various companies to get their email specials. This saves you a lot of legwork because the deals come to you and you can decide which works best for your budget.

Though it is a lot of work to pack your own things this is one of the top relocation cost savings tips. Packers charge quite a bit and from experience the procedure is quite time consuming. If you can plan ahead invite your friends over, provide food and drink, and have a packing party. Again only take what you really need and plan to keep and if it is time to replace breakable items such as dishes, toss them or donate them and replace them when you get where you are going.

If you are driving the truck and towing your car another great way to save money is to get an ice chest and take your food and snacks with you to avoid the cost of food while on the road. Since you know there are certain things you will want to get your hands on once you arrive such as personal electronics, pack these in your car so that once you arrive you can set up your personal computer, plug in your telephone and get ready to set up housekeeping in your new abode.
