Important tips to remember when traveling

There are a number of important tips to remember when travelling. Some apply in all instances, some only apply when we are travelling to more culturally diverse foreign climes; but the more tips we can pick up in this respect, the more successful our trip is likely to be and the more we are likely to enjoy it.

I remember being given a very valuable tip as a novice traveller by a seasoned veteran. He told me to always focus on the importance of "PMT" and to make it my priority at all times. I of course was initially confused as to what he was referring but when he explained that he meant I should focus above all else on remembering to take and keep secure my, "Passport, Money and Tickets," I immediately understood the wisdom of his advice. While such as luggage and its security is of course important, these three items are likely to be the ones which are least readily replaceable.

Always allow plenty of time when travelling for linking up with your chosen modes of transport. This is particularly important for such as international flights. Aim to be at check-in a minimum of two hours prior to the scheduled departure time - more if possible - to allow plenty of time for the procedure. Failure to adhere to this rule can cause all sorts of problems, initiated perhaps by traffic problems en route to the airport, a last minute rush by a great many to check-in, or even a shortage of staff at the check-in desks. Take a good novel or puzzle book and relax in the departure lounge with plenty of time to spare, perhaps enjoying a couple of drinks, to ensure a smooth start to your trip.

If travelling to a destination where the culture is very different from what you are used to, take some time to find out something about it before your visit. There may be local customs which you should take care not to breach for fear of causing offence or there may be security measures which are in place for your protection. Lack of knowledge in this respect is no excuse for getting in to difficulties.

Take the time when travelling to a new place to see some of it and experience the culture. While most of us do like to laze around on a hot beach at times, you may be travelling to somewhere that you will never have the opportunity to visit again, so make the most of your opportunity to see and enjoy the things which it can perhaps offer that are found nowhere else.

Be conscious of security at all times when travelling. If you are staying at a hotel which offers safe facilities, use them to safeguard your valuables. Theft of important items is regrettably something which can happen all too often to unsuspecting travellers and we must take every precaution against this happening to us.

Make the most of every minute when travelling. Watch what is happening around you and learn from what may be very new experiences. In this way, you will make the most of your trip and hopefully enjoy it to the full.
