Remember V for Vendetta: A Review

Tracy DeLuca
"Remember, remember, the Fifth of November, the Gunpowder Treason and Plot. I know of no reason why the Gunpowder Treason should ever be forgot..."

This opening line to V for Vendetta will linger in your mind long after the movie is over. V for Vendetta is a darkly political thriller filled with violence, action and emotional turmoil. It will make you think even while you are enjoying the explosions and action scenes. V for Vendetta, directed by James McTeigue and based upon a DC Comic graphic novel, was released in 2006. Hugo Weaving (The Matrix and Lord of the Rings) stars as V, a masked and emotional freedom fighter. His co-star Natalie Portman (Star Wars I, II and III) plays Evey, a young and impressionable girl who is dragged into V's war against her will.

The premise for the movie is that Britain of the future has become a totalitarian society, ruled by a corrupt and cruel government. V is a masked man who has seen the corruption and is dedicated to freeing his fellow citizens and waking them up to their situation. V wears a Guy Fawkes mask in honor of the gun powder treason and plot in 1605. There are numerous plots and subplots weaving throughout the movie that make it intriguing.

V for Vendetta is like a combination of The Phantom of the Opera, 1984 and Aeon Flux. Rated R for violence and some adult language, this movie has strong themes that could disturb young viewers. The terrorist tactics used by V and the violence of both the government agents and V are definitely focal points of the film. The emotional aspects are just as disturbing in some ways as the violence.

V for Vendetta is a movie that makes you think and feel. The actors do a wonderful job portraying their characters and the scenery and action shots capture your imagination. Hugo Weaving does a masterful job of portraying V, especially when you consider that he wears a mask throughout the entire movie. His vocal expressions and body language are able to convey all that is needed.

If you are looking for a movie that will keep your attention, make you think and be fast paced and brilliant, then this is the movie for you.

This was one movie I would not have watched at all. However, while visiting you we watched it. It was like Gayle said, weird, disturbing but good.
