Remembering Five Harvest Happy Fall Wedding Plan Tricks

Sheri Fresonke Harper
I remember my wedding day as if yesterday. The rich stained glass color mixtures on maple leaves and chrysanthemums combined with lilies and roses looked wonderful and had enticing smells. The decor was enriched by the flickering of hundreds of candles. All reflected off the floor to ceiling glass windows at the county park facility on Lake Wilderness. We combined taped music with musician friends. We didn't have much money, but what we had stretched further with a little ingenuity. Here's some suggestions that worked for us, or that I would consider using now:

Choose a Fall Wedding to Take Advantage of a Distant Bride's Maid's Birthday

My eldest sister lives in Virginia, so to help entice her to become my matron of honor I chose a wedding date two days from her birthday. That way, when the wedding was over, we had time to spend on her celebration, too.

Fall Weddings Make Replanting Flowers Easier

Because first frost puts many plants into dormancy, chances are they will handle replanting easier. Fall chrysanthemums, asters, and early blooming orchids (if you happen to live in Florida) make good investments over cut floral arrangements. Combining potted plants with arrangements also works and can save money. I found strings of autumn leaves at one of the hobby and supply stores like Michael's and used it to decorate the staircase.

Cold Weather and Bird Seed are Happy Partners at Fall Weddings

Often birds like to have added oil and easy to find bird seed whenever they can, but colder weather can mean bird seed is a lifesaver. Use bird seed instead of rice to cheer on the bride and groom. But do it somewhere where the mess won't be noticed.

Harvest Themes Marry Western Fall Weddings

Not all decorations require fresh flowers. Using vegetables with deeper colors like purple squash or nutty browns allow the bride to wear her cowboy boots and the groom to wear his plaids with ease. Don't be shy when you choose your fall wedding colors, jeweled floral tones, golden wheat or grasses and a fiddler makes your fall wedding merry. Some of the more attractive food trays featured vegetables.

Don't be Caught in the Dark During a Fall Wedding

Autumn is the time of year when dark comes earlier every day. Select a time of day for your wedding that allows enough light to get good wedding pictures, especially if your wedding locale is somewhere scenic. Harvest moon pictures need to be properly timed for the full moon. Sunset pictures are lovely but don't last for a long time. Candles can help make a late afternoon wedding come alive. I loved the flicker of candles on the tables and at the front reflected nicely off the floor to ceiling windows where we held our wedding. We held ours in the afternoon and could cut costs by having less formal wear.

Harvest time weddings in the autumn can be every bit as special as other times of year, just make sure that you plan for rain as well as sunshine. And all those candles can be a fall wedding savior if the winds knock the power. And if you are an older bride like I was, autumn holds double meaning for you.

thanks for sharing. I married both of my husbands in June, and both of them died 16 years afterward and both died in May. How is that for a coincidence?

What wonderful ideas! We had a friend get married in the fall, and you are so right that the decorations don't have to be all flowers.
