The all girl group was all about "Girl Power," and became a hit sensation in the U.K and the United States. Spice Girls had many hit singles, were loved by many teenage girls as well as young women and even starred in their own movie.
The Spice Girls formed their famous girl power group in 1994 and consisted of members, Victoria Beckem, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chrisholm and Geri Halliwell. The girls signed up with Virgin Records and then released their well-known hit, "Wanna-be" that was an instant hit. It was so popular that it was the #1 hit in 31 different countries.
Young girls idolized the Spice Girls by dressing like them and memorizing the movies and lyrics to their songs. Posters filled the walls of teenage girls and girl power was the craze of the 90's. Their songs aired on radio stations across the world, the group appeared on popular talk shows and their videos were constantly in the top ten on MTV or VH1. The Spice Girl's first CD, titled, "Spice" sold over 23 million copies across the world. The album, Spice, became the first best-selling album by a female group in music history. The Spice Girls had only 4 albums and 12 singles, yet have sold 75 million records world-wide. They have become known as the best selling girl group of all time.
The Spice Girls also filmed their own personal documentary that was available on VHS and DVD that showed their blooming raise to fame and popularity. Fans got a chance to follow them on their radio and talk show tours and see how the girls got along with each other and their fans.
In 1998, Geri Halliwell left the group, and then in 2000, sadly, the other girls went their separate ways to focus on their solo careers. While the group did separate, in December of 2007, the Spice Girls rejoined for a reunion tour as well as releasing their greatest hits album.
Even though the Spice Girls are no longer a group, their music and tunes still go on playing. Their albums and singles made music history, old fans still own their precious memorabilia, and even some may be letting their own children listen to the once catchy tunes of the Spice Girls. Old videos can still be seen on YouTube and other websites across the web. The late 90's will always be known as the Girl Power era from the impression that the Spice Girls left upon all of us.
