Remembering Jerry Garcia

Happy Birthday!

Renee Bagley
Jerry Garcia is in the news, as plans have been announced to turn Dark Star: An Oral Biography on Jerry Garcia, into a biopic. It's said that the movie will focus on Garcia's early life, and will detail his early days, before he became a legendary guitarist and band leader.

The movie will end when he leaves to join and create his band, The Grateful Dead. The story will show his life as a guitarist who played bluegrass in coffee shops, as a married man, with a daughter. The script is being written by Topper Lilien, who also penned Dungeons & Dragons.

Jerry Garcia was born on August 1, 1942. He is the most famous of The Grateful Dead, band members, who took the hippy movement by storm. He and his band generated a huge cult following and inspired the careers of many performers. He was a legend in his own time. Garcia died at a rehabilitation clinic on August 9, 1995; of a heart attack.

On August 12, his funeral was held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church on Belvedere. By August 13, a public memorial was held in his honor, and was attended by more than twenty-five thousand people. The mass crows brought gifts, pictures, and flowers, and Amazing Grace was played. This started an annual tradition of people gathering each year on his August 1st birthday.

Some of The Grateful Dead's biggest songs are Casey Jones, Touch of Grey, Brokedown Palace, Friend Of The Devil, Box of Rain, Till The Morning Comes, and Operator - to name just a few.

To this day, Jerry Garcia, continues to be remembered for all that he left behind - a legacy.
