Remembering Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling

Ric Flair was King!

Randy Inman
I have been remembering Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling a bit recently. I was a huge wrestling fan as a kid and growing up in North Carolina; Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling was what we watched.

Click here to read my tribute to Ric Flair, but this article is about the organization that brought him into my living room. Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling was part of Crocket Promotions and I remember vividly David Crockett and Bob Caudle calling the matches on television in Charlotte.

As a kid I liked the "Good Guys" of course and Ricky Steamboat was my favorite wrestler in Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling. His arch rival was Ric Flair whom I didn't pull for until he posed for a photo I was taking even though he was a "Heel."

In addition to Ricky Steamboat I also pulled for Jay Youngblood, Mr. Wrestling, Blackjack Mulligan, Roddy Piper and Jimmy Valiant at one time or another. The main heels were Flair (Mulligan too at times) Greg Valentine, Dick Slater, Ivan and Nakita Koloff and quite a few others. I hated Paul Jones with a passion when he turned on Ricky Steamboat!

Those were the years when wrestling was fun to watch and you could argue with friends about whether or not that was real. I noticed that old women in particular loved wrestling, my grandmother watched it every week.

More on the topic of old women loving wrestling, I will share a story. Back in the early 90's I worked with a older woman named Irene who hated Ric Flair with a passion. So some of us guys would give her a big Ric Flair "Wooooo" once in a while and she would blister our ears with cussing!

What I loved about Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling was that they toured smaller towns. I probably watched every wrestling card at the Newton Conover High School in the late 70's to whenever they stopped doing them there.

I would love to see Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling make a comeback in the Carolinas. The crap they call wrestling today is too much soap opera for my taste. Even though as you can see here I do like the Undertaker.

I was never enamored with wrastlin but many i knew were so I have seen plenty of it and I did once -in 1978, go to a mid Atlantic match at Norfolk Scope. Saw big John Stud in a cage match with Flair, amongst others - too wild - not the wrestling, but the fans. I may have to write about the wrastlin family that sat behind me and my pals - we were 4th row ringside, so it was a pretty fun spectacle.

In the words of Slick Ric: "The Stylin', profilin', limousine riding, jet flying, kiss-stealing, wheelin' n' dealin' son of a gun! If you don't like it, learn to *love* it!" The Piper's Pit video with Snuka is my favorite of all-time--insane.

Fun read. I never watched a lot of Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling but I always got a thrill when I caught a glimpse of the Nature Boy at a restaurant or store in Charlotte.

The nephew got "the Hammer"s autograph in Sea World years ago. He stuck it in with his airline ticket...and when he boarded to come home...gone. He was depressed for weeks.

Read both your Flair and Undertaker pieces, bro, and they are awesome! Thanks again for the memories, and count me in among those who wish the redneck soap opera pro wrestling has become go the way of the minstrel show!
