When did you join the Army, and what job do you do?
"I joined the Army in 1990, fresh out of high school. I wasn't 18 yet, so my Mom had to sign the papers to get me in. I serve as a 19K -- Tank Crew Member. I have held this job for my entire career, starting out as a Private E-1, until now as an E-8. I will retire next year with over 20 years of service"
Where were you stationed at when Operation Desert Storm kicked off?
"When Operation Desert Storm started, I was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado. As soon as the war began, I was deployed with my unit. I did two tours overseas in the first Gulf War, and three overseas tours during this current Gulf War. I was basically just a baby on my very first deployment - I was still a Private and very wet behind the ears. I grew up a lot during that time - I saw a lot of things that I wish I hadn't seen."
What was your role during Operation Desert Storm?
"I served on a tank as the driver and the gunner. I drove the tank where it needed to go, or fired at targets. We shot up a lot of stuff over there, but only on the orders of the higher-ups."
What thoughts did you have when the war kicked off?
"As I said before, I was just a kid when the war started. I was excited, like most of my buddies. War is a fantasy of heroism and adventure. When you get over there and have to do your job, though, that's when reality sinks in. War is not fun, it is not glamorous, and I've seen a lot of my buddies and my soldiers lose their lives in both wars. I've seen many people from the enemy's side lose their lives. It's true; "War IS Hell.""
Do you have any final thoughts for us on your service during the first Gulf War, or anything you would like to let the readers know about military service?
"I love the Army. I served as a recruiter for four years during the 1990s. In fact, I put you [Maggie O'Leary] in the Army back in 1997 when you first enlisted. I love my military and my country, and I am proud of what I have done. I encourage everyone to sign up, whether it is in the Guard, Reserve or active-duty. The military is not a job, it's a lifestyle, and the benefits are too numerous to mention. I'm proud to be able to serve in any way the Army needs me."
